    Default leads and plugs

hey guys sometimes on start-up my car shakes for about 3-5 seconds then goes away, im planning on replacing my spark plugs and leads, because they are probs old as shit anyways.

i have a VT series 1 and i kno the leads in the VT series 2 are alot different.

are the leads in series 1 that same as a VS? im looking at this kit here.

and also very noob question, series 1 VT's have the orange tail lights/indicators and series 2 have clear lights???

    Thanks Dan.

As far as I'm aware the only difference in the leads is that the series 1 had the bigger collars on the ends and the series 2 changed to skinnier collars. You can put leads to suit a series 2 onto a series 1 but you will need to buy new metal insulators to suit. From those pictures the leads look like the ones from a series 1 VT so should suit your collars.

However, my personal opinion is to stick away from NGK plugs.... I had a VT wagon which I gave a major service to (plugs, leads, oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter). Started it up and it ran like a hairy goat. Eventually after swapping things back and forward I worked out that the new NGK plugs I had put in were making it run like shit. The old carbon covered GM plugs went back in and the NGK ones went back to repco. 10,000km later when I was brave enough to try again, I bought some Champion Gold plugs for it. Used Champion Golds in all of my cars ever since.

Series 1 Executive, Acclaim, S, SS, Berlina, Clubsport and GTS had the orange indicators on the tail lights. Series 1 Calais and Senator had the clear indicators on the tail lights. All models swapped to clear with the series 2.

you can buy a set of genuine series 2 leads complete with metal covers for less than those you are looking at.

Why don't you measure the resistanc of each lead first. If they are within spec you don't need to change them and I'd be looking elsewhere for the cause of the problem.
I'd have a look at the fuel tank vapour tank purge solenoid it might be stuck open for example. It's not meant to purge until the car is at operating temperature and being driven over a certain speed. If it bleeds into the inlet manifold at startup it can cause bad idle. Also leaky injectors or low fuel pressure can cause this.

because series 2 leads dont fit a series 1? ive been lead to believe this?

and wortus, thank you for your advice, but honestly i have no idea how to check any of that mate, its kinda like your speaking a different language. but most mechanics around here are almost booked out untill xmas, so if leads and plugs can fix my prob (which it probs will) i will be happy.

Well Danlucas, I bought a set of series 2 leads from GMH dealer, from memory they were around the $65 mark several years ago, and popped them straight on. I was told that they were the standard replacement after the old stock of the friggin awfull straight leads were gone. The only difference is the series2 leads have a more 'user friendly' metal shield that fits over the plug and the lead comes off at an angle.

Only diff between series 1 and 2 lead's is, Series 2 lead's have the heat shield's.
Heat shield's wont fit onto series 1 lead's...

You check the spark plug lead resistance with a multimeter. The short leads have to be les than 10,000 ohms and the long ones less than 17,000 ohms.
to check if it's the purge solenoid it has a smallish hose connected into the back of the inlet manifild/plenum just put a clapm over it to block it off before you start it up cold.

Just buy the series 2 leads as they have superceded the series 1 anyway and put them on. Same as VX. Change the plugs...and there is nothing wrong with NGK..like any plug make sure they are the right gap.
