My 2002 VT Series II has recently started using oil at an alarming rate - about 1 litre every 1000 Kms.
We have had the car for around six years, and it did not do this previously.
We recently converted it to LPG, but this started just a little while before that, although I think the LPG has made it a bit worse.
Any ideas on how to reduce the consumption?
We do oil changes every 10,000 Kms (about every three months!).
Cheers,
JG
Tried putting a newspaper under it when its parked over night to check for leaks?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that there are no oil leaks - that was the first thing I checked for.
What weight oil are u using?
How many K's has your car got?
Next oil change, Try a thicker oil, Also get some morie's oil stabiliser and put the full litre in.
Using that much oil without leak's it can only be that your car is burning it, So a thicker oil + good additive could reduce the consumpion quiet a bit.
From memory I am using 15/w40 oil.
The car has done about 180,000 Kms, 20,000 of it in the last six months.
It is due for a service now, and I am planning on doing it while on Christmas leave.
I will try the thicker oil and Morie's Oil Stabiliser.
What thickness oil should I use?
20w50 is the most common thicker grade of oil used in these motors, try to stick to the same brand that you have previously been using,
Otherwise i would reccomend 20w-60 penrite oil I just did the oil change in mine and the motor seems to rattle less *touch wood*
Thanks for the advice.
Yeah I found both my ecotecs burn about 1.5L per 10,000. but thats a lot more then me :S But Yes try a thicker oil, i use the Penrite 15-60 Extra 10, its great much quieter then 10-40, both have over 200k on them. Also once you have chosen a oil, stick with it.
Do not use thicker oil, your engine will work harder, die sooner,if its burning oil will burn more quicker.Thick oil recomended for high klms older engines, not for oil burning engines.
