i want to find an engine code fault.
which pins do i have to short so the engine light can flash me the code?
thx

You can't do it without a compatible scan tool. Holden's way of trying to get us back there, so they can charge us a ridiculous amount to get the codes. It doesn't get me back.

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
you need to short pins 5 and 6 and count the CEL for the codes or you can hold the MODE and UP button cycle thru until you see t00 --

Will check via mode + up.
I have no 1st or 4th gears.
Thinking solenoid.
cycled through "Mode + Up" 't00' - 't31' but nothing of interest that i can understand really.
where do i get an OBD Reader from & which ones are of decent quality that will work on both Ford & Holden?
Have a look here EFILive Web Site, most of the cheaper ones don't really work with Commodores. I bought one but it doesn't read fault codes.
EFI Live also have a forum.

what about this tool with the Ford & Holden codes...
ScanTool.net LLC - OBDLink SX Scan Tool/OBD Interface - ScanTool.net
OK, after a bit of googling & some shear luck.
this is what i bought
Digimoto Online. Digimoto USB Package
i hope it's all it's cracked up to be.
I own a F02D & a Holden, so i am hoping it will work with both.
Approx AU$150 includes shipping.
Some info copied from the website...
The Digimoto 5.0 DigiScan USB package includes the software and the interface you will need for a fully supported OBD II diagnostic solution.
This package includes a DigiScan 3200 USB interface (contains all protocols in a single unit, ISO15765-4 (CAN), ISO14230-4 (KWP2000), ISO9141-2,
J1850 VPW (F02D's), and J1850 PWM (For GM's). The Digimoto 5.0 software and a USB 2.0 cable. The new DigiScan 3200 interface is based
on the mOByDic 2800 chip. The interface has an imbedded OBDII cable built within the interface itself. Usually ships next business day.
Let us know if it read the fault codes when you get it.

hey matey no drama's at all.
i've got my fingers crossed. after doing a little research i have found out that a reader will read basically anything it's the software that translate's the reader's data into something we can hopefully understand.
given that the software along with the OBDII tool has J1850 PWM protocol then it should successfully read & translate any error codes etc.
From what i could tell J1850 PWM is the GM standard protocol for OBDII data.
J1850 VPW is the Ford variant.
Will let you know though ASAP. Got an airbag light on my Fairlane & an engine light on my WH Caprice.
Some cheap ebay jobs can do the reading and clear some codes too. Got a us one here i gotta try out
Obd 1.5 is installed in the wh caprice. Obd 1.5 is a mix of obd 1 and 2. If you got obd 2 codes then the usb will work, but if you got obd 1 codes a serial data cable will work. I think obd 1 codes are codes that do not show up when you turn into ignition (only show after car started). Obd 2 codes remain on even at ignition. Just my opinion. You will need a tech 2 probably.
Sounds expensive...
Item 11 from 4L60E common problems looks like it might be what you are experiencing:
11. No 1st or 4th gear available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Hey mate the guy that done the auto said same thing, shift solenoid. Apparently theres two of them, 1 on the rear left & 1 on the rear right. can you tell me which side is for the problem i am experiencing?
I am hoping its not the PCM. I've been having some issues over the past 2 months or so where the auto would be in 2nd then suddenly go back to 1st & then back to 2nd again.
Fingers crossed it's only a solenoid as i have bought one from eBay for $50 delivered.
Your a legend BlackVXGTS
cheers for your help.
Now i have to get under the car to get to it
But once it's in....
