    I've had this installed for about a month, what worries me is the wax around the top and it look a little too rusted

    To test it properly you really need a thermometer so you can tell what temperature it opens at.

    If you have no means to measure the water temperature, you can get a general idea if the thermostat is working OK if it starts to open just as the water begins to simmer, that is, tiny bubbles appear on the bottom of the pot. And it should be fully open as the water starts to boil. It should open smoothly with not to many big jerks.
    This is a guide only...Though, if in doubt, best to fit a new one, as a faulty thermostat will play havoc with the engines operating temperatures.
