I'd use something semi heat resistant, like brake caliper paint (300degree C) or something similar.

do you need primer?
so any heat reisitant paint (engine or wheels) will be OK?
I painted mine about a month ago and have not had a problem ye i painted it bermuda blue same colour as the car what i did was sanded the cover back primed using plastic primer first it was a blue can from super cheep about $20 and then did 2 coats of the blue about 30because it was touch up paint then 2 coats of clear and yeah it turned out great photo below
I'll be completly honest; I've painted two of my familys engine covers with regular Matte black spray cans, all I did was sanded it back and gave it 4 odd layers. People suggest Primer and heat resistant paint or else it'll have problems.. Had these covers painted for over 6 months now and one of them travel over 1000k's weekly and paint is still as good as it was. - Also painted rocker covers on my brothers car and still good.
but each to there own I guess.
And for colour choice; Either simular colour to your car or a matte black (looks good IMO)
I never use plastic primer i only use spray putty over scratches just paint it black looks good too.

for engine covers just use the SCA export paint.
every now and then they do deals of 4 for $10.
so 1 clear 2 of paint for cover and 1 of your choice
the engine cover shouldnt really take that much heat. so i wouldnt suggest forking out for hi temp stuff.
you shouldnt need to prime. but i would.
also just sand it back with 320 grit paper.
sand, paint, light sand (with like 600 grit), paint, light sand, paint, (repeat sand. paint if you wish)
i would also clear coat for the shiny effect =P
ive painted my own rocker covers and engine cover in black/chrome to match car.
looks really good when it matches the car = idea for you =P
thanks Guy's
sprayed the engine cover on the weekend (x3 primer and x4 silver engine top coat ) looks good for now, lets see how long it will last!
had the car from new,and like to keep it looking clean and neat, yes I'm an older guy but still a rev head.
Normal matte spray paint will normally suffice for engine covers..
use primer then heat proof engine paint and heat proof clear coat and she'll be right
thanks for the tips, i'll buy some heat proof clear coat ,and give it a few coats
great site, being an older person ,you young guy's know your things!
