Howdy all,
I bought a 2002 VX Aclaim this week it was a repairable write off that had flood damage.
A second hand engine and gearbox was put in the car as the previous one was stuffed from the water damage.
The replacement motor had done 150k and seemed to be running perfectly and it drove that way to, So I finalised
the sale and went through all the hoops to get it re registered.
I was on my way to my regular mechanic thinking everything was fine but wanting a further check done from someone that I know
for piece of mind and a few minor things not working correctly.
The few minor things sorted and my mechanic went to check the tranny fluid when just as he touched it it exploded with hot fluid
spraying all over the place and smoke everywhere due to the extractors being hot from running.
We are both not sure what the hell happened as my mechanic said he has never in his 20+years seen this happen before and me well I am
not really that mechanically minded so it blew me away completely.
Has anyone seen this before and any ideas as to what the problem could be?
He has checked for codes etc and nothing is coming up just 0012 everything ok
looking forward to reading your thoughts
John
any thoughts guys ?
what exploded? around the dipstick or the pan
if as he undid the lock on the dipstick the oil blew out the tube i would think trans is being pressurized from water turning to steam inside pan
Sounds like your breather hose is block
NEVER LATE IN A 355ci
Holden had a problem with the early 4L60E's in the VR I think it was. When the transmissions were worked hard and got hot, like when towing a heavy caravan or whatever uphill, the dipstick would blow out of the tube and trans fluid would spray out of it everywhere all over the engine which was a bad fire risk, so they recalled them and fitted the locking type dipstick, which has been fitted to the 4L60E's ever since. Maybe its overheating somehow.
Are the transmission lines run through the radiator properly? No blockages? Hard to say what's caused this.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
blocked breather is your issue
+1 for blocked breather.
Had the exact same thing happen the first time a mate and I tried to check his trans fluid / do a trans service.
Scared the farken shit outta both of us
Thanks for the info fellas,
We were checking everything out last night and have found sooo much wrong with the car looks like I have bought a Lemon,
1. Radiator fans not spinning
2. fuse box is stuffed / melted
3. windscreen wiper motors stuffed
4. breather tube blocked like a mofo
5. cruise control not working
6. 2x coil packs stuffed from the burning tranny fluid
+ more apparently I had to walk away or I was going to go Nuclear I just don't understand how all this worked
prior to the explosion and now its all stuffed........
It was a private sale so no warranty >.< , I have spoken several times to the guy I bought it off and he said " I will help you out with whatever parts I have in stock for free"
Actions speak louder than words so I guess I will see what happens when I get a full list of all the parts needed.......anyone looking for VX parts ? as I think thats all this pos is going to be worth
How did it get roadworthy with all those things not working? Thermo fans and wiper motors would be an instant fail. I suggest you take it back to whoever did the roadworthy.
I am not sure R.E the road worthy . I took the car to a mechanic close to where the car was as it had no plates etc
the weird thing is the wipers were working prior to the fluid going averywhere, we have checked the fuses and they seem to be
working correctly.
I think I have been rorted but what can I do ??
feel so stupid >.<
I'm not surprised considering it was a flood damaged car, I wouldn't have even contemplated looking at the thing unless it was dirt cheap and I was going to part it out.
Well, you knew what you were getting into.Personally, wouldnt touch it with six foot pole.I wonder how much you paid for it.
It would be a blocked breather hose like already stated, Blocked with mud or something, It really cant be anything else, If the breather hose was letting out all the pressure like it should then there is no way it could explode.
On another note, How are all the carpet's and stuff holding up after the water?
The car is imaculte inside with very little marks to be found,
underneath the car was sweet as and in general the car was in excellent condition.
you can see here and there little marks / scrtaches etc but nothing that a buff wont take out
I really thought I was purchasing a good car and have had 3 different mechanics in the guildford area go over it prior
and during the whole rego process so I am a little bewildered as to how all this shit can spring up >.<
Depending on how much it was submersed the car will rust. You won't notice it for a while but think of all the steel you cant see, look under your seats at the frames, if your game then dismantle things like your console and door trims, lift the carpet and have a good look because you may find traces of mud around the place that unless you dismantle and treat will accelerate corrosion. Flood damaged cars usually look really good inside cause they get cleaned up but they usually only clean what you can see.
Well it has been a long couple of weeks with the car but I am making progress.
My mate and I have stripped the interior out of the car, seats carpet etc and cleaned and fish oiled everywhere
we could see where water has been and cleaned all the crap out.
Hired a steam cleaner and did the seats & carpets and we are pulling the dash this weekend to get everything sorted there.
Under the bonnet we have replaced the ABS module and pump , the Cruise control module and cable.
The engine being 150k old we thought that as we could see a few areas around the gaskets that were leaking a small amount of oil
so we decided to strip it down and re do all the gaskets head ,Valley ,Rocker covers etc and we also did a full clean out of the air intake system.
Unfortunatley I didn't think about doing the crank angle sensor whilst we had it all apart >.< as the car is getting hard to start but that will be done over the next weekend.
I also need to replace the seal at the end of the tranny where it meets the drive shaft as it is leaking so hopefully this weekend to
We also changed the 02 sensors over as they were throwing codes out obviously they were effected by the water damage.
The only other things I need to do are get the A/C sorted out probably a new pump but I wont know until I get it regassed , rear demister needs to be sorted which I don't think
is a big problem(fingers crossed)
and New shocks as the shocks in the car are very soft .
Can anyone suggest a spring shock set up that would get the car lowered a little but still give a nice ride?
I would like to get some decent rims and tires on the car also as the ones that are on are crap and the stock 15"
Will post up some pics tomoz
Cheers
John
