hi everyone,
I used to tow my old camper with my VS after i did a few things to get it up to scratch like heavy duty tow bar and extra large tranny cooler installed. Just wondering now that i'm driving my lovely VX what if anything i have to /should do to tow a camper trailer before i go buy one and have to go pick it up..
So far the camper companies are saying nothing and it should be fine but i'm not falling for that. They told me the VS should be fine and if i had of listened i would of cooked the transmission.
As always thanks in advance for all your help...
all that what you did too the vs.plus maybe air bags in the rear.electric trailer brake
I wouldnt try it without a towbar.
Elec brakes are always a great idea too.
Trans cooler if the trip is going to be stressful one with a heavy trailer. If its only a light flip top camper and the trips are relatively stress free then it could be overkill.
Depending on the size of the trailer some clip on mirrors to give you a better field of view are always a good idea.
And I would ensure the car itself is in good health. Adding alot more weight it going to add stress to the engine as well, especially around town. So a good service is smart.
Im not sure about the VS but I know the VT and VX have a tranny cooler as standard on the 3.8 but not on the 5.7 if that helps.
Thank you that all helps. I already have the tow bar fitted, just wasnt sure about the tranny cooler. The pop tops have electric brakes the flip over canvas campers dont. Will just be quick trips up the highway but this car has been good to me and i want to be good to it in return. Just had its service at 165,000k's 5,000k's under reccomended but it was due as 6 months since last one.
Just never wanted to take the salesmens word for it and wreck my car when its gone 6 months without a single thing going wrong. ( oh lord now i've done it!! it will break down on me tomorrow now )
