Hi guys i recently bought a VT ss its got the 5.7 and 6 speed
when i take off there is a horriable grinding gear sound coming from the gearbox, it also makes a simmilar noise but a lot quieter when i change gears
I thought the issue might have been first gear but it does it taking off in second also, so now im wondering if its a throw out bearing or clutch pressure plate causing the horriable noise and alot of embarresment at the lights. (the sound really sounds like a crunching noise simmilar to the noise you hear when your starter motor and ring gear arnt meshing properly) if i take off extreemly slowly and carefully the noise is heaps quieter but you can still hear a slight noise if you listen carefully.
Any ideas? All help, ideas and oppinions aprreciated
Regards Stringer
No ideas then?
Sounds like you have a shattered bearing the cage for the bearing will be floating around it can do damage till it gets to dran plug (Magnetic) 1 of three places all being in gearbox.
If you have the skills it can be very cheap and not to hard if you take pictures i just jeep them in my head.
If shafts fall out make sure you don't force them back in.
Depending on bearing you might have to do a full rebuild
Thanks for your reply VLalltheway
so it sounds to you like one of the bearings on one of the shafts and the box will need pulling out, stripping down and a bearing replaced?
Start off with dropping the box feel thrust bearing for play/grinding if it's not that a strip down of the gearbox will needed.
My VL sounded like crap if i let the clutch out my mechanic mate thought it sounded like a frozen thrust bearing it ended up being a gearbox bearing.
I paid $50 for a thrust bearing that i didn't need and $20 for the gearbox one.
1st gear was loud 2nd a little quieter and so on through the gears as the shaft changes rotation speed with gear change.
Hope this helps let me know what the verdict is
