For the same money spent on upgrading (I'm guessing you are talking a new crate motor)you could do a lot to your current LS1.
I wouldn't lean towards an LS2 as it has the small cathedral port heads same as LS1 just more compression and .3L bigger.
The L98 would be the best if you plan on some mods later as they have the same/similar block as the LS2 but with better flowing heads.
The LS3 would be the pick but are very expensive out of the crate.

Mainly asking for thoughts from anyone that has pulled out a motor to put somthing new/better in was it worth the effot time money ? for eg when i riped out the vn v6 series 1 motor and droped in the VP v6 it wa well worth it for a v6 it was pretty impressive and lasted 9 years of me behind the wheel LOL.
But as for the ls1-ls2-ls3 conversion after months of research ive relised its worth it if i have a spare $8k-$10k but for somthing im just gonna be driving everyday as a street car its not worth it for me.
