Hi guys, before anyone asks yes i have used the search and couldnt seem to find anything.
I have a vt series 1 v6 calais, the problem i have is some type of bearing noise which is prominant when braking to a complete stop, even with out the brakes applied if i use the hand brake to slow the car it still makes this noise.
i am reasonably mechanically minded, i dont notice the noise at say 60+ speeds, its more when slowing down and just before a complete stop (say coming up to a set of lights) that the noise is their, dont notice it getting worse when cornering so i dont think it is my rear wheel bearings.
im putting it down to my diff bearings or drive shaft bearings, it seems to be coming from the left hand rear of the car. im thinking of purchasing a mechanical stethoscope and putting the car on stands and getting someone to get the rears up to say 60km then slowly brake whilst i check the diff/drive shafts with a stethoscope, would this pin point my noise?
the car has done 161,000kms, i have never replaced the diff oil, for all i know its probably the original stuff so i plan on changing it soon just thought i would see if anyone else had the same issue and could give me some advice or tell me im on the right track.
i saw a tutorial on youtube were a guy used an electronic hearing device to pin point bearing noises, it worked a treat im hoping a mechanical stethoscope will do the same job.
Thanks in advance, sheded_vn
Just get a big arse screw driver put it on the suspected area and put your ear on the other end, no point buying a stethoscope for one job
You have checked that the backing cover behind the rear disc is not scraping?
i have tried the screw driver trick but didnt have alot of luck with it, and yes i have checked the bacing plate but thanks for the suggestion, i plan to take the car in to get checked out, ill let you guys know what the outcome is, if it is diff i most likely replace it with an LSD as its only single spinner at the moment.
