Thumbs up Custom automatic headlight circuit.

So my mate wanted his light to come on in the evening with out him having to touch the headlight switch.
So i made him a automatic headlight module using a phototransistor.
    here are some pics.

    Very interesting.

A big problem with my VX is the tendency to blow headlight bulbs. My Auto Sparky gave a possible explanation of the bulbs don't like the massive current fluctuations when the starter motor is engaged (or something like that ). This would solve the problem during the day, and will hopefully make the bulbs last longer.

Is there a way to override the module and turn the headlights on even during the day. Like say its pissing down rain, and there is still light out?

Also will you be posting up the resistor and component rating, etc?

The module box will give out a earth this is simply taped into the headlight switch wire. Which bypasses the headlight
    switch
The factory switch supplies earth to the headlight relay.
So yes you can still use your headlight switch when you want. But you will still have the same problem in this mode.
Sounds like a short of some sort does the fuse blow or just the bulb? What position is the headlight switch when this
    happens?

I will put up the component rating soon. just been busy.

The issues with the way you have set it up.

    Oncoming headlights might trigger it...

Just the bulbs, and just one at a time. They still last a few months but still not fun when you buy the better bulbs.

My parents VY executive has light triggered headlights. It always turns the headlights on when I pull into the garage or drive through a tunnel.

So all VYs and up would probably have this, since my folks cars is a just a base model with no options.

    Thats the strangest problem.
Is the head light switch on when you start the car?
I am quite sure its not the starter motor blowing your globes. If that was the case the interior and some of the dash lights
would go as well. I would check the wiring.

Yeh the headlight module that i made for my mate has the same thing happen when he goes under tunnels and garages
    the headlight will turn on.
A simple timer would stop this from happening.
We tested it in the day and night. So far so good. No problems.

    Yes the kit is universal.
All you need to do is trigger the parker/headlight circuit and also find a spot for the sensor to detect the light level.
So on the module box you have the following wires.

    Power(Recommend Ignition)
    Ground
Sensor wire. (just plugs into the module)
Input to relay pin 30 (this can be either a power or earth depending on your output application)
Out put wire(As stated above if you need a earth supply then the input wire should be earth vise versa)

Its pretty easy to install if your electrically/mechanically minded.

I would also be interested in buying one. Perhaps you could throw together an install guide to go with it..?

Also please let me know if your car has HID lights.
If they do i will have to modify the circuit.
Because the factory ones from Subaru and alot of other manufacturers turn on if you under pass a short bridge then once
your out of the bridge it will turn off.
which will turn the HID on/off Quickly.
When this happens you can shorten the life of your HIDs.

Hey guys thanks for the positive responses.
If you order this module this is what you will get.

    Halogen KIt

    Auto headlight module
    Wiring
    Sensor wire.
Diode (so you can still use the factory switch)

    HID Kit

    HID Auto headlight module
    Wiring
    Sensor wire
    Diode.

It's the best mod for people with older cars but would like the alternative of not having to worry about forgetting to turn lights on or off whilst driving
