At the moment in the process of maybe acquiring a '99 VT s-pack, I currently have a '93 VR - I want a newer model but not sure if I'll just be trading all the problems I have with my VR with the VT, generally are VT's mechanically good if looked after? The one I am looking at has about 200,000k's, has had a new gearbox put in it and is being sold for $2000. What do you think????

depends what you want out of the car

if you have an auto VR and want a more 'sporty' ride i reckon an auto VT is kinda not really an upgrade

same engine, same gearbox, more weight = ?

VTs are what i would call 50/50

get a good one and they are fine but they have niggles like the strange water leaks in the boot and passenger floor and you get the interminable problems inherent with a 1st series cars

but then $2k isn't a big deal i guess

provided its in good nick, go for it. VTs are quieter, smoother, more rigid body, have better general dynamics, better safety. Plenty were sold so plenty are now being wrecked for an abundant supply of parts.

Too many to list......
same engine

So isn't

Mate a VT is a lot better than a VR. At the same time as said above, a VX II is leaps and bounds ahead of a VT and may be worth saving your money for a bit longer to get one of those.

so you're telling me the VR 3.8 is a different engine to the VT 3.8

the LS1 is different to the old 5.0

the Alloytec is different to the 3.8

no amount of firmware or 'ecotec' badging is gonna convince me the 3.8 isn't the same from from VN to VY... sure you expect updates along the way but its still the same capacity, type of valve actuation etc. etc.

The 3.8 is the same size and basic engine, but there are massive differences.

The VR-VT alone is a big jump, the VT punches out 17kw and 9nm more torque just on power. But it also has a completely new intake manifold, and the completely re-worked the cylinder head and crankshaft. Basically they said "3.8 is a good size, just take all the bits out and we'll make it better", and then Holden took it and messed with it a bit more.

To the OP, VT's are great, mine is climbing up toward half a million kms and I am only now thinking, might be time for a lower km car lol.
