Default Is a VXII 5.7 Berlina P Legal?!?

Yeah, i think the heading says it all...
I was thinkin, a berlina, its not exactly a performance car, but im not sure on its TARE weight n stuff n if it would be classed in the same group as say a VX 5.7 SS...

    Any Thoughts??

i was looking at a vx ss while i was still on my p's.
technically, ur not allowed to as it works out to something like 135kw per ton (Cant remember exactly).
i dont know if the laws change from all states (i think nsw can drive watever they want...lucky bastards) but in vic its 125kw per ton (correct me if im wrong).

id contact the road and traffic authority in ur area to make sure.

    cheers

haha, man, every p plater does stupid shit in their car, thats half the fun!
if u put it in ur dads name, and nominate u as a driver, u will be put down as a "10% driver"
so when it comes time to insure, u have to put it under ur dads name as well and u as a nominated driver.
the problem with that is, the insurance companies work out the premium by age of the youngest driver.
so effectively, ur dad will be paying (for eg.) 2k a year, and u get no rating.
whereas if u put it under ur name, u will pay the 2k and get a rating.
the benefit of continueing with ur rating is the price drop (if u dont make any claims).

last year i paid 2700, and this year i will be looking at around 1500, so it may be something worth considering.

its all bullshit, but theres no real way around it.

    cheers

I think it will be over the 125kW/tonne (at least 130kW/tonne) but definitely check with VicRoads on the tare weight. I'm positive you're not allowed to drive the car irrespective of whether it's registered in your name or not. It would be akin to trying to drive a semi-trailer for a trucking company on a normal car licence - the truck's not registered in your name and your licence doesn't cover it.

If you're trying to do it sneakily and hope you won't be caught it's just not worth taking the risk on if there is an accident (criminal charges and lack of third party cover from the rego) or even just failing a random police check. I think the insurance would also be null and void as well, it would fall under the same category as being over the legal alcohol limit - the insurance company will hang you out to dry.

I just cheched for you and it would be illegal for you to drive this car. It exceeds both power-weight and capacity-weight ratios.

Even if you took the chance, the insurance will definately kill you. As already mentioned, Just Cars would be about the only insurance company that would consider insuring it for you and even then you would be looking at $2500+ a year.

There really isn't a need for a P plater to have a 5.7 litre V8 as far as I am concerned. Not to mention, if a Cop catches you with it, you will loose it.

good pick up there, i think a lot of people are concerned about power to weight ratios and are actually forgetting that it has to pass the capacity test as well! (no more than 3.5L per tonne) as mentioned above. Seriously i would wait, its not worth the hassels.

My bro is in the same situation, i think he has decided to just buy a VT calais supercharged then save up for an SS or HSV whens hes off the P's. Believe me the amount of stuffing around i did to get off a power to weight fine was bullshit, and that was in a VL Turbo, youd have no chance in a Gen 3.

Your also gonna get ripped off by insurance, i dunno bout you but id rather put at least $1500 or so of the $2500 a year you will be paying towards a better car or mods!! For a comparison im 23 and got a VT SS 5.0, i pay $1200 full comp through RACV.

Just to set it straight, the limits are as follows, 125kw per ton or 3.6 ltrs per ton. The GenIII in any form of Commodore Fails on both counts. Where as a WH Statesman passes. Also, just as a point of reference, the new sv6 fails too!! it is rated at 1500kgs, that = 187.5kw max. Misses by 2.5kw of being legal. By the way, the Statesman is rated at 1800kgs. so it can be 225kw to be legal (WH were 220) and 6.48 ltrs in capacity (We all know they are 5665cc!!). So they pass well.

2 grand for insurance! so there are some good reasons to get older That car would cost me 400$ a year for insurance and I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I had to pay more than that to insure a car, that's just silly

N.S.W. a new P Plater from now on can't drive any V8s even if it is a V8 Ford Fe-250 Diesel. Or any turbo charged or supercharged 4 to 6 cylinder cars. So you people in Victoria can count yourselves lucky.

Sounds like Morris Minor and Mr Potatohead before him got it wrong again up there like your water restrictions!! Just cos they're S/C or Turbo or V8 doesn't make em powerful!! Here's an example, A WH Statesman 5.7 Gen111 is legal in Vic but not in NSW, on the other hand a VZ SV6 is Legal in NSW but not in Vic, GO FIGURE!!! If you'd like an explanation of both, just look at my post about 3 or 4 up from this one. Last of all, What ever happened to those uniform road laws we were all supposed to get???????

Not to mention if you crashed it, being under vic road laws, you would have no insurance, they would take your money and leave you high and dry.
