Thread: VX SS Revving when it should be idling.

Question VX SS Revving when it should be idling.

VX SS V8 – 6 speed, my mate’s VX is revving at 1500 to 2000 rpm instead of idling. This problem is intermittent & when it happens if you shut the engine off & restart it, it will then idle at 800 rpm. Holden’s cannot yet figure out what the problem is, just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem.

check the floormat is not getting stuck up behind the accel. pedal and check the throttle cable is not sticking. Apart from that, sounds like an IAC valve fault. that's if theyve got one

Thanks for the feedback, the problem is resolved. The throttle return valve needed to be replaced, it cost around $45.00 for the genuine GMH part. Sorry my mistake, it cost around $145

throttle return valve is it the same for a V8 as a V6? Whats the part number? And can it be done easily or is a mechanic required?

    Thanks

what is a throttle return valve ?

the only valve that controls idle is the idle air contol valve, on the side of the throttle body above the throttle position sensor. it works on its own accord and never touches the throttle plate or throttle assembly, can't be a throttle return valve.

it increases idle when cold, idles back rpm slowly when u back off, moves in and out lettting more or less air in to achieve the RPM being commanded by the pcm for the given situation.

and yes they fail, or become sticky from PCV vapors, sometimes a good clean fixes them.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, when I see my mate I will ask for the part # & send it to you.

My mate still has the Throttle Position Sensor GMH part #17123852.

I don't know if the V6 has a Throttle Position Sensor GMH part #17123852 but the VX V8 has & replacing this part was the fix. I think this part would be easily replaced by anybody, the problem was finding what caused the fault in the first place.
