Thread: Repairing Diff on VT '98 ???

Question Repairing Diff on VT '98 ???

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum and needing some help because I'm a miser and wont buy a workshop manual Hope you don't mind me asking then! (do they have these kinds of instructions in the manuals anyway???)

I've got a VT Exec and Holden say "Your diff's stuffed". Helpful... I've priced a professional repair at $900 (including new wheel bearings) but I'm interested in doing it myself. Has anyone ever done it, or does anyone have access to instructions for doing it? I haven't been inside a VT diff before (no kidding)

I have tools and a bit of sense about me but is there anything special that's required, besides instructions?

And any idea how long it should take? I don't know if I have the hours to put in, that's all.

    Thanks in advance,

    Brendan.

Wreckers want $600+ for LSD centres...

BTW why do you want a LSD ??? aren't you having trouble getting one wheel spinning ??? seems a waste of time if the car isn't really gonna need it.

Search the forums. This website is made up of what people have upgraded on their cars, why they did the upgrade, how much it cost, etc etc. If you can't find anything then something is wrong! But here are some pointers - zorst, cai, lsd, rockers, chip (also cam package).

I know *mine* is out by the noise its making. Whines like a biatch. So when I saw this thread I thought ooo a HowTo ! But yeah - quoted recon diff from Holden for $1200 - or LSD for $750 and fit yaself.

It's the noise with ours too - a whining noise that it's had since we bought it a year ago. I suspected that was the problem back then but it's now got to the stage that it is quite deafening at 60km/h. We've done about 25,000 km on it to go from a slight whining to deafening though, mostly highway driving too.

You can't rebuild a diff yourself and expect it to be quiet... you need specialisted tools such as dial indicators to measure freeplay and you need to know all about gear contact patches to do it properly...it's a job for a professional.

    Hi
AES wreckers in sydney botany have diffs for $230 or so and they take 1 hour to R AND R yourself Undo the axles ( allen keys ) AND tailshaft and then drop the REAR cradle and it makes the 4 top bolts all that much easier to get to
    Hope this helps
