Excessive brake dust

hey all

ive got a vx clubby and have been noticing that the front brakes seem to be putting a shitload of brake dust on my rims.

its a bit strange coz im not a heavy braker and tend to use my gearbox (m6) to slow me down about 90% of the time.

the rears are fine, no brake dust there, however within a couple of days after washing my car theres dust again on the fronts.

are soft pads a normal issue with hsv brakes?? they are the original brakes (the cars done 45,000km) and perhaps need replacing yet there seems to be plenty of pad there.

any ideas would be appreciated

It's obviously a pad compound issue, what pads do you have on there.

If you've got the same pads all round the car and wondering why there is more dust on the front than the rears, its because the front of the car takes the majority of the load when braking. Perhaps you're just better off buying some new pads if you're sick of washing your wheels

Bendix pads are pretty good, they don't release too much dust.

mate i wouldn't have a clue as to what pads they are. As far as i know they are still whatever they came out of the factory with.

haha to much brake dust on the fronts and too much rubber on the rears

I used to get a lot of brake dust until I switched to Bendix Advance pads.

Totally depends on pads... Bedix Ultimates will give you a lot of dust. Basically, the better the pad (as in STOPPING POWER), the more dust.

The harder the pads (more metal content) the longer they last and less dust. The downside is of course that the harder the pads the more wear on the rotors.
Softer pads= better, quieter braking + more dust + less rotor wear.

Id prefer to Clean my wheels twice a week Knowing i have a good Brake Set up

i rang hsv and a bloke in service said they use EBC green pads.
Never heard of them but the same bloke also said that when they had replaced a couple of cars with the bendix pads all 3 customers brought them back complaining of excessive noise when braking.

Anywho i'll jsut continue to smack my knuckles on my rims each time i wash my car trying to keep em clean

EBC is a very good high performance brake pad.
Green are good but the reds (i think) are the best ones.

agree with OLS108. prefer the dust and noise knowing i have a good brake setup.

On my new clubbyR8 i get a echo honing sort of noise when at the end of braking when its just about to stop...apparantly front pads were changed on car at 30,000km service...its now on 41,000km...so its not the pads but i am stumped
i found it quite amazing how the original factory pads only lasted 30,000km...they must be soft

Speaking of brake dust, you wouldn't believe the amount of brake dust that accumulates on the front wheels of my bosses new car, a near-top of the line BMW 745i.
The standard 19's on it have fairly thin spokes, and they are regularly coated black at the front with dust.

On our VX-II, I have noticed a bit of dust at times, but not much. No idea what pads it has. We drove 3000km on holidays, and started with spotless wheels. There was only a fine coating on the spokes at the front when we got back, and we certainly didn't see any rain to wash it clean at any time.

Bendix Ultimates Will eat your rotors alive LOL and there $130 each side from holden all Bendix Brakes are Bad Now do some reashearch and i think you might find that there made by sum 1 else these days ? i stay with the original brakes what dust ? dont get none becos i clean the car two a week LOL
