Mafless V6

A friend of mine has a VX SS and his CAI setup is a wide mouth air intake with a filter inside and it connects straight to the throttle body. He has a mafless tune and the original airbox is no longer used.
Has anyone tried this type of setup with a V6 Ecotec?
I was thinking that it would be heaps less restrictive than a setup that goes through the airbox.

I've heard of it being done, not sure of the benifits though, wot about a pod, enclosed from the heat of the engine with an intake from under the car??

Would be less resitrictive than the airbox.
Im guna go the Type-S from Fit for mine I think, just did 1.9 rockers.
