Easy fix, buy a "Gregory's" manual for 30 or 40 bucks and they spell it out with pictures

First thing you need to do is remove the dash fascia to get to the instrument cluster. To remove the dash fascia, unclip the gear shifter and power window surround (just gently pull it upwards being careful not to break anything). Now undo the 2 screws on either side of the cigarette lighter (or dummy).

Now you need to undo the 2 screws at the top of the instrument panel. Now lift down the panel undernath the steering wheel (the thing u open to get to fuses),then undo the 3 screws at the top holding the fascia in.

The dash fascia will now be ready to partially remove, carefully unclip the fascia. Before the fascia is completely removed you will have to unplug all the electrical connectors (lights switch, hazards, fog lights, trip mode), to do this simply reach from behind and pull them out whilst holding the front. Depending on what stereo you have and how it has been mounted, this may also need to be removed. Now the dash fascia can be carefully removed.

Its best to now lower the steering wheel as far down as it will go. The instrument cluster has 2 screws holding it in at the top. Unscrew these, now pull out the cluster just far enough to get your hand behind it and unplug it from the wiring harness. Now the cluster can be carefully pulled out.

Thats the hardest bit out of the way, to change the bulbs is a 5 sec task, simply twist out the dodgy bulb and twist in a new one.

Now you gotta put it all back together, which is just a simple case of revresing the removal procedure.

It really is easier than it sounds, I have done it numerous times and never had any problems. It won't take too long either. If you have any more questions about this, let me know and I'll try to help u out.

One thing Ive come across when pulling the instrument cluster if for some reason you are replacing it ( I realise this isnt the case in this instance), but make sure you yank the airbag fuse, there has been odd occasions when you stick the cluster back in, the airbag light stays on, requiring a tech 2 reset from Holden. Ive had it happen twice, the first time when I replaced the standard unit in my VTII SS with a HSV unit (didnt matter, as I needed Holden to set the Kilometers), the second time only recently when I stuck the old SS cluster into my exec because I couldnt remember how many K'ms were on it, and curious if they interchanged, when I changed it back, "voila" failure music... :b:

Hope this rambling saves someone any grief in the future

The reason for the fault is the cluster needs to know the srs configuration, if this is different from the sdm to the cluster it will log a code.

I took the cluster out of my VX and put in a different cluster because I hated the Police 2kph increment speedo and wanted the normal 5 kph one and was too impatient to find someone to swap the graphic faces so I could have the speedo face in the original cluster, now I regret it, as soon as I put the other cluster in it beeped the airbag fault code, so I got Emtech to swap it over for me but it now still beeps the airbag error code even with the original cluster back in, now I will have to get it re-set with Tech 2...what an idiot, I should have waited, but could not stand the sight of that Police speedo any longer, but could only tolerate the beeping for a couple of weeks when I got the guage skins swapped. I really thought the error code would only beep with the wrong cluster in.......damn. If I had removed the airbag fuse before switching the clusters I suspect that I would not have had any trouble.......is this correct...anyone? Is there any way around it without having to fork out $50 for the tech 2 re-set?
