I replaced my rear brake pads on the weekend cause one side was really low. I thought that this was causing my squeeling brakes.
Installed new pads(feredo sp? brand) and they still squeak. Sometimes driving arond a left hand corner i can hear a slight noise coming from the rear end. One thing i noticed with both calipers is that one of them, where you move the part that kinda locks in the pad, it can come right off the calliper. The other side had rubber boots holding it onto the caliper and i couldn't remove it. could this be a slightly faulty caliper? Also one side was down to about 1mm, the other one was at about 4mm. looking at the pads there was a big difference.
The side that had the 1mm pads was the same side that the brake pad locking part of the caliper could come off.
I do understand that commodores have a squeaky brake problem, but when i first got the car it didn't make a noise under braking. Now even with a rear pad change, it still squeaks. The same brand pads I took off the car as i put on.
Any advice would be appreciatted.
Thanks

the calipers have slide pins and when the boot is split or missing, the grease that is on this slide becomes hard and locks the brakes on slightly causing the uneven wear of the pads.... the reason why they are squeeling still probably because the disks are glazed or scored....probably need machining or a quick scuff up with some emery tape
ok i've had it for about 30,000km's now so yeah they probably are alittle worn. So if i take the wheels back off and basically sandpaper with some wet and dry paper, dry ofcourse and that should help the squeal?
so unless i replace the boots and regrease it it will wear out abnormally again?
thanks for the quick response.
well i usually check the dust boots, slides and disk for their condition before i replace the pads, it is recommended to regrease the slides with an anti seize grease every time you replace the pads, you shouldnt really replace pads without machining the rotors as it can cause brake shudder and usually a slight squeel.... roughening up the disk surface wont permanently fix the squeel but it does stop it for a few thousand km's...
