G'day folks,

Over the years I have been seriously fed up with the bonnet closing on me when working on the car, the last straw was when the bonnet slammed shut and the retaining hook when straight through my digital multimeter. So ...

I thought I would share with you'all my simple solution to sagging bonnet gas struts: put a piece of PC pipe over the struts. If you cut the pipe to the right length, it nicely engages when you open the bonnet. And it is easy to release by pushing it appropriately after taking the strain off. The pipe can be readily installed by removing the gas strut at the top, and slipping the pipe over.

A picture, attached, is worth a thousand words.

Michael

There is also a crowd called "Strut re-gas" that will recondition existing ones - worked a treat for the sagging struts in the tail gate of my old VP wagon - look 'em up on the web, if they don't serve your area, they may have contacts of a crowd that do...

Re-gassing is OK, but it is expensive. The last time I asked it was going to cost about $100 to do four struts. I don't know how much new struts cost.

I bought a pair of gas struts for a VX bonnet a few years ago, as an esky lid holder for the boat :) From memory they were $25 the pair back then. :)

I would guess that you could probally pick up a pair for fairly cheap nowadays.

Well, if new struts are only between $12.50 and $15 each, then it is definitely worth replacing them. I wonder why regassing is so expensive?

depends on where you buy them from. I have seen them selling for $80 a pair, which is rather ****e.

And as for the cost, thats like saying "why does holden charge me $50 to install a rubber grommet?". They want your cash. :)
