    Default P platers and V8s

ey guys..... Im on my P's and come in under the old P plate system (I got my P's before the 1st of july 2007) and want to buy a VT SS. Is a 5.0L VT SS under or over the power to weight ratio? Can you drive it one your p's? Coz my mate just got a v8 xr8 ute 5.0L and is on his p's and apparantly just scrapes in under the power to weight. Is the VT SS the same or is it over the legal limit?

That's what is good about SA, we don't have any of those power to weight ratio rules, well we didn't when I got my P's, but we might now.

Well, If you nor going to drive it all the time you should be fine mate, Just dont go doing any burnouts or anything, just take it easy for 6 months, as if a cop can tell the difference between a VT and VX anyway, just keep the stock exhaust so they cant hear the v8 roar.

If you get pulled over by a Highway Patrol Cop or a Traffic Cop, they will know the difference and would have the knowledge to get you on power to weight, but they wont pull you over unless you are speeding or hooning round or driving a clearly defective car.

If your not gunna buy the 5.7 and gunna go for the VT SS 5.0L, I woudn't bother, just wait the 6 months and keep what you've got. Because once 6 months comes arround your going to want to sell the VT for the VX anyway, and you'll end up working off a loss.

Totally agree, 6 months isnt that long to wait anyway.

Every cop knows a 5.7litre SS is over the Power to weight ratio for any P plater. Very few people have exemptions and unless you're a tradie, I doubt you could get anything other than a V8 ute exempt.

If you drove a 5.7litre SS with P plates displayed, you would get pulled over within 15 minutes. I can almost guarantee it. I know a guy who thought he'd be fine, within 2 weeks he ripped off his P plates, after many fines.

Just in case you weren't sure, the new penalty for going over P to W is now 3 demerit points. The penalty for not displaying P plates is 3 points. You would probably get pulled over for breaking a road rule if you weren't displaying P plates, so there's at least 1 point, mostly.

You are only allowed to lose 5 points in a calendar year on your P plates, so you'd be walking for 3 months.

If the car's a steal, buy it, but be very careful driving it. You won't have any insurance and the cops won't be on your side.

If i were you, i would wait out the 6 months and get the ls1 over the 5ltr in a vt/vx, because you will probly be always wanting more with the 5ltr because the vt is so heavy.
But on the other hand, i would probly buy the ls1 now and keep in on the down low for 6 months lol.
As long as you dont drive like an idiot and the exhaust is stock, they sound like a v6 anyway with a stock exhaust.
My mate has a WH with an ls1 and never got pulled over in it on p's, and hes now also bought a VY SS ute still on p's and has had it a few weeks without being pulled over.
But both have stock exhaust and were stock all over, once you start modding them, id watch out for cops.
But keep it stock for 6 months and save ur cash.... then blow it oall on the beast

Totally agree with that! Not the sort of debt you want to start out with in life.

Having said that maybe you could get the car and do a swap with your dad or someone you trust for the next 6 months. Though it would be more than tempting to take it for a fang!!!

In six months the price may drop, and you may be able to get a bargain, especially if they are effectively taking a lot of people out of the market place for the ls1 with power to weight rules.
