Hi All,

Hope everyone had a Merry Xmas and is ready for a bigger one for NYE.

Anyways, heres my problem. I own a 2000 VTII Berlina and at low speeds (e.g. occasionally around round-a-bouts and even more noticable when slow enough to pull into my drive way) a knocking noise is heard from the front left wheel. Its like a knock-knock-knock-knock.

I pulled the wheel off thinking its maybe the stabilizer rod again but it looked okay. One thing i did notice was that when i grabbed the brake disc and tried to slide it out it didt seem to be locked in (is this supposed to be secured in when the wheel gets put back on?)

Anyways, i put the wheel back on and started the thing and sat there in Park in my driveway turning my steering wheel left and right and the knocking noise was there again on the left wheel regardless of what direction i was turning the steering wheel.

Any ideas what this could be??

Cheers

Eddie

Also,

I dont hear it at high speeds (i.e. >40).

It seems to be more apparent when turning the steering to the left.

Also, it doesnt make noise over bumps, only slow turning

Hi Trewman,

I just got my wife to turn the wheel left and right while i was under the car and im pretty confident that its the Strut Tower bearing...thanks for your contribution.

Even though the noise is loud enough when heard behind the wheel when i put my hand on the strut thingy under the bonnet i can hear the knocking and grinding and can even sort of feel it as well.

I rang holden and they quoted me $300 per side.

Is that a reasonable price??

Okay, Pedders quoted $154 for parts only (bearings and bush for both sides) and $356 for supply and fit with wheel alignment.

My uncle has a spring compressor so im gonna give this a go on the weekend.

After i have convinced myself that there was knocking and grining from the Strut tower bearing i went to my Uncle place (he's a mechanic) to show him the noise. And guess what........no noise.

It seems to be intermitent.

Would a worn bearing demonstrate such behaviour??

Would the fact that i drove 30min have to do with anything??

Shouldi fix it before i drive to Jervis Bay?? (from sydney)
