Default Brake squeal

Hi,

After about 5 minutes of driving the brakes squeal really bad and are driving me nuts. You can see the driver in front look in their rear view mirror as they think I am about to run into them. I was thinking about getting the rotors machined, maybe even replace them. But I was wondering if the brake pads might be the cause too? The car stops fine.

Also I can hear what appears to be possibly the rear brake shoes making a faint dragging noise when I am driving. One quick stab of the brake and it goes away but the sound comes back instantly.

Has anyone had these problems?

Give them 4 or 5 really hard applications at around 70/80k's.

If that don't work, then I'm guessing there's a lot of brake dust build-up in there.

rear brake shoes scraping sound might mean the handbrake needs to be readjusted or the spring replaced.

Unfortunately since the outlawing of asbestos in brake products the quality of the compound has tended to become dodgey. Most cheap pads produce a heap of dust and this leads to brake squeal. Machining will only help if the rotors actually need it done. Take the wheels off and give the whole thing clean out, that should reduce the squeal for a while anyway.

Other than that you may need to replace the pads with more expensive, better quality pads like Bendix or Holden Genuine.

Ahh asbestos... how you worked so well as a brake pad.

Try putting some anti- squeal compound on the back of the inner pads.
