As title states is replacing stock coilpacks and ignition leads with upgraded ones worth it or just a waste of money?
some brands and products would be good to
thanks
I try an avoid replaceing OEM with OEM when i can get a better aftermarket product.
MSD are my spark vendors of choice.

yeah ill have to sus them out, just looking at upgrading some of the parts under the hood so thought might be a good place to start
I dont know that it is worth it much- but i would be keen to hear the results. I imagine it would only be worth it for forced induction, or maybe in N/A if you played with spark gaps-found the new optimal gap for the increased spark
yeah im looking at going down the forced induction path end of the year so
azkwazere: wheres the best place to get MSD ignition stuff from just usual sprints, autobarn etc??
Yes MSD can be purchsed through most auto places.

Id of thought GM has already done their homework on this and if they could get more power or economy out of the engine by adding something as simple as more spark then they would have done it.......given the publication of fuel consumption figures and the quest to beat the frauds. They already have three coil packs for six cylinders.
Certainly new leads by themselves wont change performance, better quality leads just offer superior insulation or ability to stop higher voltages leaking out before they get to the spark plug.
MSD coils for V6 are good but only slightly better than stock so save your money if current coils are ok.
Better still are Holden supercharged V6 coils, but again if your current coils aren't misfiring save your money for now.
Leads on the other hand, the stock ones are great for your stereo and thats about it, for performance they start deterioating from the moment you run current through them.
MSD and Magnecor both make excellent silicone spiral wound wire core leads.
The spiral wound wire has the wire spun around a central core (usually fibreglass) and the wire is continuous from end to end.
This continuous wire strand gives good current flow and the spiral winding stops any interference through your stereo.
These types of leads can last almost indefinately if looked after and the outer sheath (usually silicone) doesn't get broken.
The stock leads are carbon impregnated fibreglass and over time the carbon breaks and gets gaps along the length of the lead leading to misfiring etc.

Ebay has some MSD coil packs now.
One good thing about getting some expensive spark plug leads is they do give some better performance hard to notice, But they last longer, And they should they can cost a mint.
Stuck some 10" Top gun made to order leads on my old VP, Over 12 months still purring along nice with iridium plugs.

cheers for all the help
Just might add that my Magnecor 10R leads are over 10 years old and don't miss a beat.
So they have definately saved me money in the long run.
Had them on my VL turbo then had one extra lead made so that I could fit them on my superchared 6.
