At risk of sounding stupid, what does it do?
If it just tells you where radars are, simply stop speeding, and you'll never need to worry. Cruise control works wonders.

ah hey I know its the age old argument, im quite a sedate driver and my license is my living so I dont take risks but sometimes your speed does wonder unintentionally and because of the way they police speed over here, (hiding in bushes etc) id just like an alert of when there is one so i can check my speed. ive only had one point for speeding in 2 years and even that was in my first 2 weeks of emigrating as i was unfamiliar with the whole school zone thing, and as i entered it the sun was in my eyes and i didnt see the sign.

Here in South Oz, there is a very stiff fine if you are caught with one of those detectors.

Haven't the police migrated to using laser guns to detect speed? If so, then the radar detector will just be an expensive paper weight. Happy to be proven wrong here!!!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the traffic boys have a radar detector 'detector' which can detect the signal emmited from those on board radar detectors!

I find that the little pedel on the right you know the one you push the car goes faster if you dont push it to hard you don't speed, so you dont need a detector and you save some cash.

Yeah pablo is right they have detector 'detectors' cheeky buggers. also highway patrols and maybe others use oncoming radar wich only sends radar beams when they press the button, so by the time u hear the beep the roof top disco lights are all ready cranking.

Detectors don't emit a signal, they only receive. You cannot "detect" one. AFAIK, there aren't any that can detect laser type speed guns, although there are some advertised as doing it.
From experiments that I have read about, if you are the only car on the road and your detector goes off, the copper has already gotten you. It only helps when there are cars in front of you, as the detector picks up the radar signal that is aimed in your general direction.

Wrong.
All detectors leak a signal...so they can all be detected.
If you live in WA they are legal, so get a V1 they have the longest range.
If you live in other states of aus they are illegal, so get a Bel STi. As these are the ONLY radar detector that is un-detectable.

The signal they leak is pretty weak though so you have to be close to the detector to be detected. In WA this isn't an issue, so it doesn't matter if they can or can't.
