Hey guys im currently looking at getting a vt ss or calais. just wondering wat are common issues with the ls1's? do they last long? are there many issues with them? and what sort of fuel economy im likly to get. also one of the cars im looking at getting is a vt calais with 190 on the clock. is that getting on for an ls1? is it at the stage where its just gonna break and stuff? thanks
VT LS1's are well known for rear main oil seal leaks, and piston slack.
Im not sure when the problem was reciterfied or if it was at all, so when we were looking for a LS1 we looked for VY onwards, but this is different caus you want the car, were we only wanted the engine.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
190,000 is average for a VT. Depending on how the vehicle has been looked after will depend if there are any problems. Odometer readings in the 250k mark aren't uncommon in VTs because as long as you take regular care of it, just as you should with any car, it will keep going without any major issues.
There will be niggles and things that are molehills, but it's up to you to turn them into a mountain if you want to(like I did with my power steering leak).
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
Like tom said above Vt had a problem with piston sla[ as well as oil pick up problems. some got revised at the dealer. so its going to be luck of the draw. Once you find one you like you could always get the VIN number and go to your locale Holden dealer, They can enter this into there system and tell you what revsions got done.
And no it didnt get fixed with series 2 as accentstencil said as the LS1 VT was the series 2. I beleive it got fixed with the VX.
So listen to the engine if its sounds rough and sounds like apiston wants to come out and say hello then stay clear of it.
you would be very unlucky to find a LS1 any of the issues that they had when they first come out as they would have been well and truly fixed by now
i have heard of LS1 statos used by limo company's with 500 000km on them and still going strong
as long as they have been serviced regularly they should be right
like any car if its had a hard life things will go wrong with it
just try and find something with a service history
