Had done quite a few repairs to my vx since i got her more than 8ths ago. For the front end i had changed to new tires, and replaced the stabilizer bush on the passenger side, then took her out to get the wheels aligned.
Wat bugs me is that the car when turning to the right, theres this "vood...vood...vood" sound that the tire specialist couldnt figure out where the sound is coming from. Rims all balanced and true.
could this be some kind of bushing or wheel bearing that needs to be replaced? I tot it was the latter but cancelled it out since there is no shimmy or wobbling from the wheels. At low speeds 30-50kmph, the sounds is just annoying and then goes away.
any suggestions on where to start looking?
Could just be noisy tyres. It's hard to say without actually hearing the noise. Some tyres can be very loud.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Another possiblity... the tyre may be rubbing against the inner wheel arch liner.
Castor adjust will fix. Unless the liner is adrift.
Better the Devil you know!
My money is on the wheel bearing. They are a sealed unit, they can wear without becoming loose, especially if it has hit a curb.
The wheels aint rubbing against anything eventhough i turn them fully. The tire guy asked me to bring back the car in a month's time to see if the tires wear unevenly and then it could be bushing related.
It could be the tires since this is the first time i'm using these tires (all 4 brand new) my last sets were michelins and didnt make a sound. Pretty expensive though.
I'll check the wheel bearing at the dealer now and will update you guys on this chapter.
A wheel bearing will be noisey when spun with the ride in the air.
Wheel bearings can be eliminated by fitting a set of stockies, when available, and then going for a spin.
Sounds like the tyres then, mate.
Cheap s##t from the sounds of it...
I always avoided directional tread. Much quieter.
Also look for tyres with a low edge tread and maintain a high pressure while in use.
This will reduce feathering/scalloping potential therefore less noise.
Better the Devil you know!
I have replace both bearing assemblys in my VT around the 100,000 mark for the passenger side and 130,000 for the drivers. They made no sound when spun in the air and they just sounded like noisey tyres when driven and the nosie changed dependent on the speed.
Jezz
I have replaced dozens of front wheel bearing and the sound can usually be picked out when spun in the air.
A slight growling noise, very faint as compared to a road test.
Better the Devil you know!
Yea, I remembered that i had to replace the stabilizer bush on the passenger side. I'll replace them and take a look at both sides of the car. I havent got any compliants bout the tires since they grip well on the road and is wearing evenly. Just the annoying sound i can hear from the cabin.
what brand / size and are they directional? cause that sounds like tyre noise to me

My front end would make noises and the noise would change when shifting the weight of the car from one side to the other by going around a corner. Changing the wheel bearings has appeared to got rid of that noise and slight vibration, when two sway bar link kits didn't. I found the left bearing was the worst, and whenever I went around a left corner (taking the weight off it) it got quieter.
My money is on wheel bearings, how many KMs has the car done? My bearings didn't start going until over 180,000kms. If you can get it down to just the hub, take off the brake disc and all, then you could spin it and feel any inconsistancy and also listen for any noise. Should be almost noiseless.
Good luck.
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
Come to think of it, the sound does get amplified when negotiating a roundabout (turning right). The noise happens at slow speeds. My VX has got less than 135k on it. Have taken the wheel off and brake discs but cant seem to tell if there is any inconsistent from the left and right wheel bearings. I might have to get the bearing out (both of them?) and get them replaced. How much would they cost?
I'm still using the 235/45R17 sized tires using Sonax SX1 tires all round and yes, they are directional.
for a price of the bearings then take your VIN to Holden. First just ask for bearings for a VX without telling them the VIN. If they had different bearings for different series they may ask for a VIN or a build date.
Apparently my VT was right on the change date for two different bearings. It's strange though, because the only difference I found was whether it was ABS or not. *shrugs*
