97' so you would be looking out for a 5.0L SS?

other than being a complete slug in a VT, the 5.0L in them are probably the most reliable of the lot.

I'd save a bit longer and get the ls1. Each to their own though, just my 2c worth.

I agree. I made the same mistake years ago by buying the 5.0L.
Wish I had picked up an LS1.
    Easy to work on.
    Better fuel economy.
    More power.
    Lighter engine.

yeh that depends on what you want, ive owned a series1 vtss for 4yars now and alltho it isnt a powerhouse im still proud to drive a aussie 8 not yanky danky crap thats about twice the price on parts if it was to crap itself, water pump for instance 5ltr $50 5.7ltr$300+,not baging gen3's because 304-350 would have more power but 5ltr's sound better...

i'll chuck 2c in here and say get the rear suspension sorted out quick smart, they seem to have a good problem of wearing out the inside of tyres due to a camber issue.

i have a 98 calais with the 195 and so far the only thing to go wrong in the good year and a half i've had it has been the alternator (at 175000km). she cops a good belting every now and then and so far im happy with the way it's been holding up

Having driven both, with the usual cat-back and CAI, I must say, the old five-point-zero sounds a lot nicer

the sound of an LS1 is terrible compared to the 5L.

however, personally i wouldnt get a 5L VT purely because of the weight.

Agreed, i could live without the glourous sound of the 304 if i was 1.5secs quicker down the 1/4 in an LS1
