Hi guys,
My VX series 2 exe gives out ticking noise whilst idling but the noise goes away when you rev or at drive higher speeds. What it could be ? Could it be any of the belt pulleys or it is related to lifters ?
Cheers thankx
Yes it is now but the ticking was there even when it wasn't on gas. Ticking has been there for over a year and now it is noticable.
Gas systems often make a ticking noise, it's the injectors at play.
Open up your bonnet with the engine on and try to hear where the ticking sound is coming from. If you put up a pic of your engine bay and circle where, we can probably guess.
It could be the gas, your engine belt or even a sign that your engine is becoming unstuck.
How long does the ticking go on for? It's not the antenna coming up is it? I had a mate get concerned over that noise.
Describe the length, volume and location of the tick and we can make a more educated guess.
Thanx for your reply. But try understanding the ticking noise is only at idilling, it is not related to antena 4 sure. Bonnet open you rev engine up and the noise is gone, when the speed drops it does it again. Even if you leave the engine idlling it will reduce. It is most prominent at idiling and when engine drops rev to idiling while drinving.
Cheers
How many kilometers has the car travelled?
More than likely a worn or 'sticky' lifter. Have you tried any oil additives to free up lifters?
Pablo
90,000 KM. What u mean by sticky lifters ? And what sort of additives can be used.
I have the same problem with my VT, has done 120,000 K's. It make a constant ticking sound while idilling. It is not on gas and it isn't the injectors. Car runs perfectly, and the idilll pully has been replaced but with no success. What are the symptoms for a timing chain on the way out?
thx
It could be any bearing on the serpetine belt. The power steering pump might be ticking, the air-con clutch might be ticking.... anything.
My guess is it get's quieter as the engine heats up and the idle speed lowers.
Does the car smoke at all?
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
tho I never have had the reason to try them, I see several brands of oil additives in auto shops which label them selves as 'lifter free', to free sticky lifters.
Sticky lifters do not fully pump up to reduce the clearances in the valve gear to zero.

one of my Vt's also has a definite ticking sound, but the other one doesn't, ( I own 2 VT's )
I haven't really had a look to see where it is coming from but I suspect it is a leaking exhaust manifold Gasket, as I have seen it many times before. before you go replacing lifters etc, check the exhaust manifold gasket, when they have a slight leak they make a ticking sound like an injector or a lifter. it is a fairly common occurance.
but usually the sound is always there, but u say it is only at idle, this could be due to the metal expanding as it heats up and could be sealing the crack in the gasket.
any way check out the gasket before you go pulling the top of the motor apart to replace lifters.

I used Nulon in my car to clear off sticky lifters. And I serviced my car today using Penrite lub. I used a pipe as stethoscope to listen to ticking noise and found out that it is coming from the bank of cylinders on on either side. All the pulleys were silent. Now, i want to replace these lifters so if some one who has done it or knows how to do it will be very helpful. Any recommendations where to buy better lifter or original from Holden are the best?
Cheers guys n thanks for you support
Guys, Where do you buy stuff in melbourne. And where can i buy thise roller rockers n lifters? Cheers
try supercheap, autobahn, repco?
im also getting a ticking noise, it seems to be louder when the cars colder
and only when you accelerate.
will have to get on to some of the additive
I can get you a full set of lifters if you like. Go to repco or any place like that get a quote and i will see if i can do you one better. No i dont run a business but i try to help people out.
EDIT if your cars only done 90,000ks i highly doubt its your lifters
I had this problem it was the lifter retainer snapped. Take off your manifold and check it out before you need a bottom end up rebuild like I did.
If you think lifters are at fault for the ticking noise, then change your oil & filter, using a good fully synthetic oil before you do anything else. I had this issue a while back & the oil change did the trick almost straight away.
