Hi,
I'm thinking of painting my interior, Is that possible that i can do it myself (as a girl)? i mean around the dash and centre console.
Any simple instructions? specific paint?
cheers
For vinyl surfaces, use this stuff called VHT vinyl dye, you can get it from Autobarn in a can, it actually stains the vinyl as opposed to painting it. It won't flake or peel provided you prep the surface properley. A good wipe down with some prepsol and then some water and a clean rag then use the vinyl dye and let it dry for about 24 hours or whatever is recommended on the can.
For hard plastic, use a plastic / vinyl paint. Once again, prep it properley and layer down coats of clear over the top.

What about the top part of the dash, im not sure what its called but the whole front surface? How is that done?! (Taken of -if possible- and painited?)
help please guys
The dash box? Do you mean the centre console lid? Anything that is soft vinyl, use the vinyl dye, otherwise paint on soft vinyl will just crack and peel. Hard solid plastic, you can use a good plastic paint, but make sure you prep it well and use clear coat over the top.

work perfectly... and looks pretty good as well
It means nail polish is used instead of spray paint.
I got mine professionally sprayed in 2pac Silver, baked in the oven and all. The paint is as strong as that of a bumper, the reason why it's still in perfect nick after 2.5years.
Unless you've sprayed before, pay to get it done. Otherwise you'll end up with orange peel, overspray, drops and god knows what else.
Or find a man to spray it for you.
i did mine in normal body spray paint
just make sure you clean it and prime it first..
then put a clear coat over the top

Question, so this isnt like a spray paint that would get messy? Could you stain the steering wheel too?
I paid $50, but I'm pretty sure the going rate's about $75.
You're probably going to spend about $25 at least in paint and clear coat, plus you're taking the gamble of getting it right. If spray painting was that easy, you could get a job as a spray painter as easy as you could a Maccas job.
A professional will do a much better job than you and use better quality paints. It's worth paying the little bit extra to avoid any chipping, inconsistencies, etc.
Where abouts in Melbourne are you? You could use my guy, he'd probably knock it down a bit for you.
Noble Park. Upto you whether you want to travel.
I would suggest ringing a few panel places up and ask them how much they'd charge you to spray it. Tell them you'll take the dash out for them.
There's a nice little guide that tells you all the screws you have to take out for it.
It all makes sense now doesn't it? How silly were you to think any different![]()
Don't go to Noble Park, you would probably get rolled for your centre console as soon as you stepped outta there anywayHave a stab at it yourself, it's the only way you will learn. Trial and error! If you lightly knock the paint back between coats with about a 1500 grit sandpaper and apply quite a few coats, it should come out good. Remember, preparation is the key!
And about the Vinyl dye, yes you could do your steering wheel, but in my opinion, it wouldn't look great. Just use it on smaller less conspicuous parts like the centre console lid etc.

The panel beater will always do a better job of spraying and for car panels, you could never even come close.
I'm lazy and I can't see many practical benefits of knowing how to spray, especially since I'm good mates with a panel beater and my next door neighbour is a spray painter by trade also.
If you really want to learn to spray, try spray a bucket (or anything else plastic and worthless) and see how it turns out.
thanx guys for the help, ill ask the panel shop that i know and if that doesnt go right then ill give it a smash
Cheers
Dear god. You DO know that prepsol, sandpaper and masking tape can be used for other things don't you, so they CAN be used for lots of other things. Lots of things are wastes of time, but we still do them.
I am mates with 2 panel beaters, one is a family friend who runs a prestige panel shop in Vermont, one does street and show car work in Dandenong. Doesn't mean i went to them to get my painting done, i did it myself. It's more fun learning to do it yourself, then you can put your skills to other uses.
But then again, you just said you were lazy, so everything i just typed was a waste. I want my 47 seconds back please
Anyways, if you are interested, have a shot at it yourself, if you just want it done and have no interest in learning and would rather pay people to do things for you, then take it to a panel shop for sureI'm sure you are old enough to decide fot yourself!

Do the benefits of learning how to spray a piece of plastic outweigh the costs of doing so? For most people no. Spray painting has very little use outside of cars.
Plus, I would guess that your spray job at home wouldn't come anywhere near the finish of either of your friends. If you had metallic paint like mine, I would be guessing that you'd rather take it to them than DIY.
There is a point where it is much better to pay someone to do something for a better job than DIY. Electrics is another one of those things.
But we all make decisions about what to do with our limited time. You made yours, I made mine.
Yes, but the satisfaction of at least having a try and getting it close outweighs dumping my stuff off at a friend, getting him to do the work, then dumping cash on him when it's done. That's the easy way of doing things. Our fathers must have taught us different.
I'm not getting into an arguement with someone i don't know about spray paintingI'm sure this chicky is a big girl and can decide for herself judging by the posts made in this thread
