Can someone please give me any ideas on upgrading the performance on my V6 VT commodore? I rencently purchased my first car which is a series 2 berlina wagon which has full kit and wheels. The car looks nice enough but the problem is that it lacks a little power. The motor has done just on 200,000kms and the tranny is a little tired. Any ideas and also rough costings would be greatly appreciated! Cheers.

Yeah here's an idea. Don't bother.
It will always be a slow car. You can spend 5grand on it and you'll still get munched by stock V8's.
Learn everything about driving the car properly and then upgrade to a car with more potential when you're allowed.
The Ecotec was never designed for performance, neither was a stock Commodore. Spending small bucks on an LS1 (the 5.7) will give you much better bang for buck than anything spent on your VT.
You'll have problems selling a modified VT also. So pretty much, trying to make your VT go fast will be like rolling up a hill. With a car thats showing the signs of wear and tear like yours, I wouldn't bother. You're wasting your money.
what a load of ****ing ****
youngbuck chuck a supercharger on it and blow away stock v8s:P
actually i know quite a few v6s that beat stock 5ltrs
if ya dont wanna go charger go cam injectors zorst and remap it will get up and boogie
The 5 litre is a P plater legal slug (up until very recently). Saying you can beat a 5litre with mods is like bragging about beating your grandma in an arm wrestle.
Why not calculate the price differential between what you've got an an LS1 and then juxtapose that price to the level of spending required to get a V6 to that standard.
Learn to drive in your car, invest the money you would otherwise have spend and spent even more cash in the future when you're allowed the power.
BTW, the supercharger option is a very expensive one and hardly worth it. Ignore that if you made the joke for that very reason.
To be honest, for the long term it is really best to save your money and get a V8 conversion. Get it done as a proper job and you won't be happier.
For a few cheap and easy additions to the Ecotec, get a cooler thermostat, high flow air filter and 69/70mm throttle body. Also just get a sports muffler from eBay, the full exchaust isn't worth it and the cheap muffler only will give you just as good a noise.
So,
Decent K&N filter about $150
69/70mm throttle body about $150
Thermostat about $80 from Forced Induction technologies
Sports Muffler about $350
It's what I have in my VT V6 Executive Sedan, and it pleases me.
EDIT: oh and a remapped memcal to accomodate all that better for $150.

I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
V8 conversion is expensive and it's better to buy and sell if you want an 8.
Btw, you can do all of the standard bolt ons listed above and it won't make a huge difference to how the car goes. Keep in mind that you're not going to get a fast car, if you have to spend the money, get your suspension upgraded.
Lower the car, fit some decent shockers, change your suspension bushes and then you'll have a much more fun car to drive.
mate if u want somthing ull notice just chuck some diff gears in the thing. its not gonna be a rocket but it will drive much nicer. but i do agree with these guys. i tried on my six and got over it and now have bought at ls1. it goes way better and with a little work they fly.
a cammed zorst remap etc etc v6 wouldnt come close to my 5L which was stock.
thats a bit harsh to 5L my 5L wasnt that much slower than my vx ss maybe about half a second if i could drive when i had it. well i still cant drive but i think i got a good time for a untuned ls1 standard diff.
13.3 1/4 exhaust only untuned!
my 6 had cam heads tune diff exhaust i reckon i would have givin ur 5L for a run
maybe i dunno what yours would do? i did a 14.6 @97mph with a really bad 60 foot time 2.6 seconds because i didnt know how to get grip :P so i think thats good for a 14.2 atleast a perfect everything run maybe even 14.0 if i had a CAI and tune i would definatly think it would do 13.
13.3 1/4 exhaust only untuned!
yeh never did a quater mile it did 0-60 in 6.73 with subs and gas tank in the back lol 14.6 is very decent though wat model 5L was it? also u loving the ls1 or wat? cant wait to pick mine up
13.3 1/4 exhaust only untuned!
Ahh... sorry, I think I forgot to mention the other thing I've installed that has made a noticiable difference to my otherwise stock V6.
Electronic shift kit. Just the cheapy one from eBay.
I really should get it dyno tuned too.
