Can someone please give me any suggestions on how to get the key to turn the ignition in my vx wagon, or could it possibly be the steering lock that wont allow it to turn.![]()
Try release the steering lock pressure by turn the wheel a little bit when turning the key failing that squirt some graphite powder in th barrel then try
Tried but steering lock is on full lock. Any other suggestions?
this happend to my dads vx abt a montha go. His key wnet in, but wouldnt turn, he rang racv, and they snapped the key. Had to call an auto elec, he came and removed the steering wheel and igniton barrel etc.. auto elec fixed it all up the next day.
thats the best person to call.
The auto elec we had, he said he keeps a few barrel in his car, due to vt vx being known for this problem. Hope it heps.
Cheers Marc
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
same thing happened to me a while back car was stuck at work in a super tight car park so i couldent even have it towed.
luckily a mate of myne from holden did a cash job walked away paying like $200 he came out and fitted a new lock in about 5 minutes
imo any auto elec/locksmiths are daylight thieves.
with alot of jolting and twisting you can eventually get it to the ON position, of which u push a pin into the slot and the whole ignition barrel will slide out. it could be a cheap fix such as one of the wafer's on the end misaligned which could be a $5 fix at your local locksmiths, or it could be internal damage from years of grinding. either way, keep trying to turn your key to the ON position and pull out the barrel yourself, or its a very expensive trip for a auto locksmith to come out, grind the housing ect. to get it out![]()
You'll have to smash the ignition off... impossible to remove unless you can get to accessories position. Use a chisel and hammer to removed the ignition (unplug it first). Once removed, you will be able to turn your steering wheel. To get it started in this condition, the plug that you removed from the ignition will have a slot you can insert a screw driver in and turn (same as turning the key). You'll need to use your key to create a circuit on the steel ring (where it used to connect - this will most likely be hanging by a wire now).. and she'll start... iv'e done this on my mates VS, and my VT...
But!! try spraying some CRC down the barrel first, this may free it up so you don't have to smash things up..
If you do the above, just buy a second hand barrel with a key, then change the remotes over so you still have the same remote but different key.... looking at about $80.00 worth of parts second hand..
Hope that helps!
Well thanks for everyones suggetions I managed to get the barrel out and replace it with another one i had and had a key to. So thanks everyone i got outta this one with some good advise. Shes back on the road and purring.
