Depends on your price range and what model you are after?
But without knowing the details, i am saying SS manual all the way!

Does your partner want to drive your car? If so, you'll have to go with the 6 anyway, otherwise if the cops see her in an 8 she'll get pwned majorly. I'm thinking...maybe get a S or Berlina and do some work on it? Or maybe get a V6 Exec for now, keep it for a while, and then sell it and buy a V8 when your partner gets her Opens.

I'd wait till she is off her P's and buy something better. Even older and better. VT's are gay with 5 litres in them, too heavy. But if you want one sooner rather than later, just a manual SS i suppose.

I think the manual was only featured in the Exec as a povvo option. I know the base VX Exec was M5, but did the A4 cost any extra like it does with most cars?
I think they figured that the people who wanted luxury would probably not be going for manual, which is fair enough. Berlina's are usually given to higher management and families after a bit more luxury, I doubt it would sell very well as an M5.
It is suprising the Exec came with an LS1 and the M6 though. Apparently it's much cheaper to insure than the equivalent SS.
I'd say go the 6, the insurance is much cheaper, plus your gf can be your designated driver.
If you love driving, buy the manual V8, but be prepared to pay the (disproportionately) extra insurance costs.
At the moment I would go the 6, but in about 5 years time (assuming financial situation is all the same), I would definitely go an 8.
