    Default VX Gearbox

    Hey,
My brother has a VX 6spd Manual. But the car won't go past 1st gear. Been to the mechanics on the Gold Coast and they've told him it would cost bout $2400 to repair and then the wreckers have told him to just get a new box and that would cost bout $3000 . Any ideas as to a cheaper option or possible solution?

    Cheers

Definantly give Mal Wood a call.

Whatever the wrecker has told you, forget completely and never go back there. Never buy driveline components from a wrecker.

Mal Wood is good......... But expensive.

Down here in Melb, holmart do new T56's alot cheaper than your wrecker mate reckons.

Are you sure your slave cyl, or master cyl isnt rooted. Id try to bleed the clutch.

Im only going by you saying "wont go past 1st gear?"

Could even be your clutch has worn right out.

I know when my clutch decided to become one melted piece of metal at Calder years ago, i only had 1st gear for about an hour.

But when i did my T56, Malwood charged me about $1100-1300 (from memory) to fix 2nd, 3rd and reverse.

He thought it was the clutch but the mechanic said it wasn't it, tho he's getting a second opion today.
He was just driving normally when it stopped.

the mechanic has told him that the bearings have gone in the gear box and that it would still cost $2000. does this sound right?

Some say expensive, some say priced accordingly.

I got a gearbox completely setup ready for a 5L (Cable Clutch) for the right price.

When you add up what a wrecker was charging for the same product, Mal Wood was about $500 dearer. Taking into account the 100s of satisfied customers from Him, and my knowledge not to buy anything from a wrecker, that 500 extra is a ****ing good warranty.

$2000 for bearings sounds about right. Keep in mind labour costs to remove and replace the gearbox before work can begin.

For sure, i agree. Ive had one fixed by him, and i still have it. Did multiple Drag passes, 126mph runs, flat changing etc. You name it i did it.

One thing ppl forget is, to add an extra 500ml of oil via the reverse plug switch. Mal Wood says no, but its been proven to be a extra insurance policy by many a T56 hard user.

    Anyway back on topic LOL

Gearbox on a LS1 takes less than an hour to get out (pending prior experience)

But still, without proper knowledge, bar his post. could be anything.

Does it crunch? grind? pedal feel any different? etc etc
