Hi everyone
I bought a VT Calais a few months ago, just starting on a pretty serious audio install.
I'm wondering if anyone's able to tell me what the standard amp output is on the Ecotec V6 alternators? I did a bit of a search on here and couldn't find anything. I'm not intending to replace it, just need to know so I can match a battery isolator to it.
cheers heaps
85amp on the ecotecs I believe mate (atleast thats what my VS was), i'd suggest looking at a 120amp if its a serious sound system though and definitely upgrade the wiring from alternator to battery.

i have a 120 amp alternator on my 2002 vx ecotec
According to my Gregory's, the VT V6 alternator is 100 amps (maximum output).
I just checked the box from a bosch alternator I bought for my VT and it also says 100 amp.

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Cheers heaps guys. I called a Holden outfit over here (over here being NZ) and they said if it's a Mitsubishi it'll be 100, and if it's a Bosch it'll be 120...
I think I might just have to stop being lazy and actually have a look at the damn thing lol
While the maximum output of the alternator is worth knowing, it is typically not achieved until engine speed is in the 3000rpm range.
What is just as important is the output at idle and whether the alternator will cope with all the accessories on while doing the commuter crawl etc
Typically the alternator will have two ratings ie, 120/40A , they are specified for particular alternator rpms, but basically equate to 3000rpm and idle output when connected to your motor.
A 120/20A wouldnt be suitable for a commodore used in commuter traffic.
V6 uses Bosch KC-A compact 90A or 100A alternator. The variation is probably due to availability or alternator model change by Bosch at the time of production.
V6 police pack and WH with T82 are fitted with Mitsubishi 120A alternator
VT series 1 V8 engine uses Bosch 120A alternator.
Gen III V8 are fitted with Mitsubishi 140A alternator.
These data are lifted from my VT-VY manual. Hope it helps.
Thanks mate. Might try and get a hold of a Mitsubishi though I don't like my chances, and personally I don't think it's worth the effort for a small increase in output.
The 140amp V8 one is probably a goer, but I have no idea whether it will fit. Anyone know or ever tried?
massive thread dig i know, but i get yelled at for when i create new ones without searching.....
Anyway, im also in the same boat
Big stereo, need a bigger alternator, VT alts are all 100a factory Bosch units
The VT 9C1 units are all 120a in the v6's and are from a Mitsubishi... so that's all clear
the one thing that NO ONE can tell me and i have been hunting for WEEKS is ---
What model Mitsubishi is the 120a alternator from? im guessing from between the 1997 - 2000 range, but was the motor changed between those years or the alternator? hmmm my hunt continues
Is this a trick question? The Mitsubishi 120 amp alternator is not out of a Mitsubishi, it is manufactured by Mitsubishi Industries and fitted as a standard alternator to some Commodores.

That would explain alot lol i thought it was the car company, it's alright though i found out that the mitsu alternators are crap anyway, there is a 120a bosch replacement to go into the VT V6 anyway :P
My Mitsubishi 120amp alternator hasn't given me any problems.
