Guys
Currently experiencing a whining noise coming from I think the engine.
The noise is not constant and is mainly apparent when accelerating.
I first thought it was a mechanical whine but its so high pitched and the
way it cuts in and out it could possibly be electrical.
When traveling 80klm when in 4th(auto) then slightly accelerate the whine
comes as the revs go up and then goes with the revs still increasing.
Almost sounds like a siren at a distance as it the whine slowly become audible and then fades out. The whine noise still increases its pitch even while in 3rd changing to forth, so is not solely rev dependant.
It sounds like it coming from the dash tweeters but covered them
with no difference. Having the eliminate control and stereo off makes
no difference. Running on petrol or gas makes no deference
Have changed sparks (with new NGK) with no difference, my other guess it maybe Ignition leads (only 2 months old). Alternator maybe?
Any Help appreciated

Cheers
Hey mate,
its hard to diagnose a "high pitched whining noise" without hearing it... But usually its caused by the alternator recharging the battery.
EG, if you leave your stereo on for 8 hours and partly flatten your battery, when you drive the car you'll hear that high pitched noise.
To see if thats the case, measure your battery level (engine off), turn everything electrical in the car off (Eg lights, stereo etc) and see if the noise goes away.
If your battery is getting old it can cause added drain on the alternator, again causing that noise.
Good luck.
Depending on how high pitched the noise is, could be a vacuum leak.
split vacuum hose.
failed diode in alternator.
noisy steering pump.
dry idler bearing's.

Thanks guys I will investigate and report back.
Further to the above the whine is only apparent while the car is under load/medium acceleration, fades in and fades out, and last for about 10 seconds at any one time. When cruising at a fixed speed no whine apparent, then accelerate again it fades in again and while still accelerating it will fade out again while the revs are still increasing.
When I first heard with my radio on, I thought it was a police siren at some distance away.

loose drivebelt perhaps ?, just a thought
If the whine only comes at under load (While reving up or down), then I would assume something trying to prevent the belt speeding up. For example failed bearings or the water pump can do this due to not be able to spin up or down faster thus causing belt slip over the the belt wheel.
I may be far from it but try removing the belt and spin each bearings and see which is not freely moving.
not an L67 is it
doubt it guys
Guys
How free are the idler pulleys meant to be?
Removed the belt and the single idler(with grooves) spins freely, however the other two with no grooves, while not totally stiff, don’t continue spinning when made to.
The frequency of the whine appears to be to high pitch to be mechanical, but will continue to fault find.
Cheers
Ideally, the idler pulleys should spin freely. Spraying with WD40 might free them up. It would be better to remove them so you can spray both sides.

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Changed the drive belt with no change, in whine.
Before changing I check all idlers , pulley's.
Although the groove less idlers where a little resistant, they appear ok,
however when spinning the water pump although it was fairly free, it
did make a grinding/bearing type noise. I'm not convinced this is the cause
of the high pitch whine heard within the cabin, but it sound like its still up for replacement.

Appreciate your advice
Blown, I think you maybe right, after changing a few settings on the climate control(berlina) previously and now, the noise goes for a couple of days then returns.
It got me stumped, as it sound electrical if anything, as mentioned before sound like humming a siren at a amature football match
mmmmmmMmMmMMMMMMMMmMmMmmMmmmmmmm as accelerating and then fades away even as the rpm decreases and engine speed increasing from about 60k's onwards.
Cheers
Have the same problem in my VX.... I guarantee you it's the same noise - a high-pitched whine (almost a squeal) that comes in when accellerating and falls/disappears when low on revs. Have been informed it's likely the water pump needing changing - mine's done 210,000k's. But will investigate the vaccuum leak now as well.
Can you let me know if you've solved your problem.
Cheers
Run the engine without the belt on for a few seconds if no noise then you will know if it's one of the pully wheels or alternator bearing or water pump.
Hey guys, anyone end up fixing this annoying whine?
I have it on my VT as well.
done 145,000 km

i sometimes get this. if you have an amp it could be the remote wire isnt connected properly. or the re could be something wrong with the negative connection with your battery chck the wire. and with your splits then it might be the crossover box thats all i can think of with electrical problems.
I have the same problem.
Im wondering if a pulley bearing often needs replacing on these motors, it doesnt sound like the water pump to me.
Oh and mine has only 130,000kms.
Ok, my dad ended up fixing it. He just greased up a pully thing... (don't know ive been drinkin, ill ask him in the morrow) and now the noise has stopped!
So its been all good, but it never impacted on performance.

Mine does the same kind of thing, except it's just a bad earth and a whine coming through the radio :P
When I have people in the car I tell them it's the supercharger, haha.
depends on what type of whine it is, there is many things it could be
for example if it happpens while accelerating it could be your differential do you hang burnouts and do doughies in the local car park??????
also as someone else has mentioned could be many of these
split vacuum hose.
failed diode in alternator.
noisy steering pump.
dry idler bearing's.

Anyone able to pin point what their problems were ?
I also have a high whine like a gushing noise when accelerating.
I have to replace the pulley tensioner today and going to replace the idler pulley's as well so I am hoping it is one of these 3 and not the harmonic, water pump or air con. s
Sounds like it might be a supercharger, would need to have a closer look.
