Lightbulb VZ roof mount light into VT: The How Too!!

Righto how to install VZ style roof mount sunglass's holder into VT. A bit long winded for a simple conversion sorry.

Tools needed: screw drivers, soldering iron, side cutters, crimpers, razor blade or sharp knife.

Parts needed: 6x crimps, electrical tape, solder, 3x self taping screws and the light unit (about $30 from e-bay)

Step 1: remove the roof lining, do this by taking out the sun visors, 4x jesus handles, light and all pillar trims.
The pillar trims have clips on the back and come off with a quick hard yank, the middle one's also have a screw each.

Step 2: Cut the hole! If you look at the roof pillar the sun visors were bolted to you will notice some extra holes
in the middle, 2 of these shuold line up with the new light mount holes. Put the 2 self tapper screws in the holes then re-install
the roof lining and hit it up against the srews to mark were your goin to start cutting.

Remove the lining and place the light assembly on the back of the lining on top of the holes you just punched in it, and trace around
the edges of the light. Now start cutting from the inside of the trace untill you have enough room to squeeze the light into the hole,
remember don't cut around the trace because then the light won't hold the lining up and will look un-neat.

Step 3: Now we're gettin there time for the wiring. Ive set mine up to be a slave to the origional interior light, it will come on when
ever the origional will but also can be turned on by its self. There are different ways to do it but il show you mine and you can choose.

You will need to run 2 wires from the old light to the new one, i used twin core double insulated wire because its easier.
So you need to join the new red wire to the old orange wire with a black trace, and the new black to the old yellow with a blue trace on the loom in the roof.

Now on the new light assembly cut the new plug off. Solder your red wire to the green one, your black to the blue and fianly the white goes
to earth i used a spare hole near the mount. This is were you want to use those crimps so if you pull the light out no wire cutting needed!
Note these wire colours suit base model calais and stato may be different im not sure, and yank the fuse before you start the wiring.

Step 4: Ok re-fit the roof lining and light and make sure it all works and lines up, if it does re-fit all your bits and you done.

Notes: don't use long self tappers or they will go through the roof and on the back of the new light there is a rectangle locating clip
cut that sucker off! The hole i cut is about 20.5 by 16.5cm through the middle of the square but use this as a loose guide i think it may be a bit large.

Did you go through the roof... lol

Good how to, should be moved to the how to section.

Did you already have a light there? I was thinking about doing this to the ute, but my interior lights towards the rear window

Hey banks, holden set there lights up with a permanant power and the use the bcm as an earth switch. So green always has power, blue gets earth from bcm when doors open and such and the white is earthed so when you flick the switch to on you get light.

Hey mate, I just got one from a VY that was self fitted by the owner, As i removed it i noticed the hole was roughly cut wasn't factory fitted, Then noticed only 2 wires needed connected to the centre light, Both power and one single wire connect from end to end.. Shocked me someone did a job like that and worked that well.

I installed one of these in mine ages back and I never had to cut out the rectangular locating clip! The hole was actually there already... maybe this was applied to the VXII models in preparation for the VZ?

Best thing to ever install I tell you what. My only problem is I keep forgetting where the sunnies are . Just not used to putting them up there.

I just did mine, Worst Case scenario happened, I cut it to much and you can see the cut on the corners, But that was the small part of bad..
Apparently the original screws were to long?, They made dimples in the roof.
Past that guy around the corner will fix the lining and fit the glasses holder for $160.
    But that dimple roof omg.

    Hi every one
slick get away you can nock those dimple's down a bit with a decent flat hammer just dont hit to hard or the dimple's will be lots bigger and goin in the other way!!!

Shizzle you could cut the lining while its in there if your game, but if you stuff it up you'll be up for $75 for a new lining. Also ring motor traders or holden and they may be able to help with a plug and play loom
