    Default VX SS LSD oil

I'm changing my diff oil, and went to holden and got the "special" additive comes in a 300ml bottle. Does anyone know how much I had to the diff oil? Is it the whole bottle? Also my manual says to use a synthetic diff oil, but the service guy said to use a semi-sythetic? (forgot to ask him about the additive amount.) Cheers

use castrol saf-xa, its designed for holden and ford irs diffs, it has the additive mixed in with it, so its a complete fill oil, it also say on the bottle to not mix it

How did you find the Penrite Singear ? Also doesnt need additive apparently. Spoke to Penrite and they recommended the Limslip 90 over the Singear which was strange. I asked is it listed they said yes but limslip they still recommend.

Do you have an LSD ? Diff chatter ?

If so i got some of this so called 'additive' in a 100ml bottle. I didn't add it tho cos as as soon as i changed the LSD diff oil with new Mobil SHC ID 80w/140 Synth LSD oil all has been quiet (5,000km ago).

Holden say the factory LSD diff oil put in is 'life long". Judging on the condition of what came out of mine it definately needed changing @ 100,000km (was like water & stunk of burnt rubber)

Just had my oil and the additive done at Holden on the VX SS, all fixed now no chatter, and the clunks have gone as well. One other thing worth noting is that Holden put out a technical bulletin re the pinion seal, apparently the seal in the VX is not compatible with the additive and the seal will degrade and leak given enough time. I have the bulletin here some where, I ran it past the dealer and he said they have done them without changing the seal but during the days of warranty work Holden insisted on changing the seal.
So to be safe I had the newer pinion seal fitted. I will check the hard drive I have the bulletin here some where.

    HOLDEN SERVICE BULLETIN
LSD Chatter - The original oil and friction modifying additive used in VT and early VX commodores with LSD, can in some cases be innefective in adequately lubricating the LSD unit, depending on operating temperatures. GMH, in conjunction with SAA (Spicer Axle Australia, formerly BTRE), have revised the oil and additive used to help improve lubricating qualities.

GMH use Mobilube SHC ID (1.5ltrs) in LSD units along with the revised friction modifier (100ml). They suggest no other alternative! The new oil and modifier requires the existing Viton material pinion seal to be replaced with a new Polyacrylic material pinion seal.

Apparently the additive is not really good for the diff, it was only used due to complaints about noise etc. It limits its effectiveness etc.

I used that Castrol SAF-XA and i read the bottle and it said "May require additives refer to manual". So i added the additive too not knowing it already has it. Does that matter? Cheers

LOL, SSbeast, these gear oils are stuffed, and i dont blame you. Look at Penrite even, on their lube guide it still mentions may need additive right, then when you ask them they say dont add anything to Limslip 90 or Singear etc. I think they all have varying amounts of this additive. The less you can have to shut it up the better as its not really beneficial to it. Then again, you have used a synth version, the additives will eventually break down, so if its working it should be ok.
