VT front end knock

I have a knock coming from the front, sounds like strut tower. Clunks over all bumps i.e. manhole covers etc and when turning lock to lock. Was told it was sway bar links had them replaced but noise remained. After reading a few forums it sounds like top of strut bearing or maybe bearing plate?? Problem is my car has kmac top of strut kit which i think requires you to drill out the existing bearing plate. My car is lowered and i believe the shocks have had it too so want to replace the whole lot. Concerns i have are:
1. I'm more conservative now than when i first got the car so what are the most comfortable shocks that i can install on 2.5in lowered car (can original gas be used on a lowered car?)
and
2. Do i have to replace with the kmac kit, believe they are bearing plate and bearing in one, or is there someway to reinstall original parts without welding

There are braces either side of the car running from the chassis rail to the fire wall . Try tightening them up, thats what i did , and no more noises from the front end.
