When I start my '99 VT Calais (hot or cold) it starts to turn over very briefly, pauses for up to a second and then turns over properly and starts.
It clearly sounds like the starter motor has trouble turning over, but only for a short amount of time.
The guy I bought the car off put in a new battery right before I got it, but said he then found out it wasn't actually the battery, but some connection with the battery...??
Has anyone experienced this, or know how I can fix this? Cheers!
I had a pause in my starting of my old car which was a VS, I would turn the key and hold it there, and it would take about a second pause before it would kick over. So I replaced the starter motor and I haven't had the problem since.
maybe its the earth cable to the starter motor?
Had exactly the same problem with my VS, the starter motor is buggered, and quite possibly the wiring going to it also. The problem was even worse in the VS when it was hot, as the wiring had built up so much resistance, and excessive current was being drawn from the battery, not only killing the battery but burning out the wiring at the same time. Had a new (reconditioned) starter motor fitted for $170, and it was still fine when I sold the car some 12 months later.
Starter motor is on its way out mate. Sounds like the solenoid rod or some part related to the solenoid is stuffed. You could get a recond starter motor or if you're brave, you can get the parts for the solenoid kit and try replacing those bits yourself. Either way you need to take the starter motor off.
If you atleast have a look down where the wires connect to the Starter, you may spot a loose connection...
