lookin to replace the bunky stock vx steering wheel,
but dnt wanna buy those gay steering wheels from super**** auto,
wanna keep the holden thing goin,
so will a vy or vz steering wheel fit onto a stock vx?
..
and also,,
my tacho was gettin stuck around the 2thou mark,
wouldn drop below that,
so i took out th dash, and the inst.cluster,
took the cluster apart, and changed the speedo and tacho needles over,
and fic\xd it up good,
now,
i was told tht the speedo needles are calibrated,
and that touching=bad.
all seems ok,
but
any suggestions as to whether the speedo would be rooted?
nope, and you wouldn't be able to put one of those supercheap auto ones on either unless it came with an airbag.
Chev badges are an instant fail
As ashbox says - only VT/VX steering wheels will fit. Check ebay you can get leather trimmed wheels (with coloured highlights if desired). Mmmm Leather...
awesome.cheers,
anything about the speedo tho?
To my knowledge, There are 2 cars fitted with a VY steering wheel, One is Felony's VX.
And the other i can't find it, It had a how to do it step by step, I'll keep looking it's out there somewhere on google.

Hopefully this helps someone. Note I have not done the conversion, was going to but airbags are expensive.
Well guys i got the conversion done and everything was a successThis mod was performed on my series 2 VT, series 1 VT's should share this clock spring system aswell but if you have a bolt mounted sideways under the airbag module, you have the old clockspring system and this will not work with the VY wheel, a VY clock spring would be required in this case.
Thought i would throw a small guide together for anyone else wanting to try this
Image
Tools and Parts:
-5/8" socket piece with a good socket wrench or breaker bar
-flathead screwdriver
-T30H bit (T30 hollow point torx bit)
- Spare horn connector (or borrow it from the old airbag setup)
Steps:
1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove airbag fuse
3. Disconnect airbag wiring harness from under dashboard (optional)
4. Remove the 4 torx screws from the back of the wheel to release the airbag and remove it slowly.
5. Keep the airbag facing away from you and slide your flathead screwdriver under the yellow airbag connector and pop it out.
6. Remove the airbag and place it in the open, out of sunlight, face up and away from static sources.
As you can see both airbags share the same wiring harness
7. Next you will need to crack the bolt on the steering wheel using the 5/8" socket bit, if it is very tight it might pay to have someone hold it while you work away or step out of the car and pull the wheel and wrench together. I used a torque wrench to get the leverage i needed.
8. Once the bolt is removed, center the steering wheel, then you will be able to jiggle the wheel off the spline and slide it off slowly. Take care to hold the clock spring in place, but if you loose it, it has directions to align it again anyway.
9. Grab the new VY-VZ wheel and slide it on as soon as you can straight to lock the clock spring back in place. Ensure the green shows fully in the window of the clock spring and tighten the bolt back down.
Here is the wheel fitted in place
There is a change between the old VT horn system and the new VY one. The VY system uses 2 plates (1 on the back of the airbag and one on the wheel) seperated by springs and there are clips on each plate to connect to. Some VY-VZ wheels will come with the connector wiring to plug into the existing horn connector but mine didn't. All you need to do is get a spare connector with a nice length of wire and put a crimp on the end of each wire to connect to the plates. On the old VT wheel the horn connector just plugged straight into the airbag module...
10. Once you have made up the horn wiring adapter just connect the red plug to the horn plug on the steering column and plug the 1 crimp into the back of the airbag plate and the other to the steering wheel plate.
Here is the horn connector to go between the 2 plates
11. Next plug the airbag connector back in to the new airbag and to a final check to make sure the area is clear around the airbag.
Ready to install on wheel
12. Line the airbag locking pins with the holes on the wheel and push down to lock it in place.
13. Put in the airbag fuse again and reconnect the battery. While standing out of the car put the car on ignition and wait for the airbag light to turn off so you know it has passed the self test.
14. Start the car up and full lock the wheel to both sides to ensure everything feels right then take it for a test drive
Radio Control Conversion:
From my experience fitting my wheel to the VT, changing the clock spring WILL NOT make the VY radio controls work with the VT headunit. The VY radio controls are setup so that there is always resistance in the circuit = to all the buttons being pressed at once.
The VT radio controls however maintain an open circuit when nothing is pressed and switch on a different resistance circuit for each button pressed.
I have modified VY radio controls to work with a VT headunit, it is a quite simple task if you know a bit about electronics and can solder. The best way to do it is to remove all the resistors from the VY radio controls, cut all the circuit tracks then just build a simple circuit out of link wire and resistors...

Excellent information, this should be made into a sticky or put in the How To section.
For us that are not so confident in this, Does anyone think, We might get a auto elec to do it?,
I have enough issues with holden telling me i can't fit WH door vents in a VT..
Also the new horn airbag set-up on the VY onwards is much better then the VT-VX,
If anyone has ever in summer been woken by there horn going off tap they will know.
They get hot go soft, Then the weather changes it gets cold, It presses on the sensors for the Horn, And off it goes.
Guessing that's what the springs and dual plates for the horn are.
