charged V6 overheating!

hi, a friend of mine has a supercharged V6 VX calais and recently started having problems with the temprature gauge going up and down. she was driving along and it started beeping and when she looked at the gauge it had skyrocketed then dropped straight back down then it was ok for a few days then it skyrocketed again then dropped and was fine for few more hours then done it but it didn't go back down she was only about a kilometer from home so kept going. when the radiator was checked it was empty and there was a decent size hole in it and oil in it????? any ideas i'm thinking headgasket!!!!!
