i've got a VYsII v6 auto wagon with p205/65r15/95h and the tyre shop pumped them to 40. the sticker on the door says 32 or 38 at max load. even my mechanic said ok to do 40. does that sound right?

P205/65R15/95H is stock tyres for commodores. You should inflate them to pressure as recommended on your door. The problem with over inflating especially when your car is not under any weight is your car will ride stiffly on the road and won't have the proper grip from the rubber-road surface contact, which can be dangerous. I normally keep mine around the 33-34 psi mark.
