Default Rear Axle? Movement

Hi all,

I have had my new car (VX R8) for about 3 weeks now, and this is the first manual commodore I've had, and the first v8 for a while (last was a vk). So I am not too sure about the naming of things...

1) I am hearing a clunk in the rear drivers side when ever I turn (right I think...) at low speeds.

2) I am getting a clunk from what sounds like the diff when I am driving at slow speeds.

I have researched and found the possible answer to #2 is diff oil additive. I have place the car in gear and checked the tail shaft for movement, which this is none.

However, while fiddling around checking for loose items under the car, I found the drivers side axle shaft was loose. (I am referring the shaft coming directly out of the diff). The passenger side was tight and had no movement, while the drivers side could slide forwards and backwards by a couple of centimetres.

Is this the issue with #1?

I am just getting used to the common things associated with this car, so not too sure what to expect as normal etc.

There is 2 parts to your CV's, Driveshafts, Half shafts, or whatever some ppl call them.

There is the stub axle: That goes intoo your diff.

Then there is the Driveshaft: Bolts to your stub axle, then to your rear wheel hub.

You need some end float in your driveshafts, so they arent fully loaded.

Your stub axles tend to bend on the splines.

My case, i have snapped many a stub axle in my diff on The VX.

Your problem seems to be a shagged diff, going by your comments on the noise.

It may be a shagged driveshaft, but its hard to diagnose, on a computer.

The additive you talk about, is called anti chatter additive. It will "help" but only for awhile.

Simon
