Hi all,
First time poster here, been lurking and picking up useful info since I bought my VT a month or so ago. Hoping you can all help!
The problem started for me on Wednesday afternoon on the way home from work - got to the carpark and started her up and there was a very loud, high pitched noise coming from the console. It was the kind of noise that really gets into your head so it was hard to figure out exactly where it was coming from, but I thought it was coming from the dash. It seemed to back off a bit whenever I drove up a hill or worked the transmission a little harder, so I initially thought it may have been some warning device for the transmission.
I pulled into the first servo I could and called my mechanic, he had never heard of the problem before. Neither had my nearest Holden dealer.
I drove it home carefully, didnt really push it above 80km/h. Played with it a little when I got home, but couldn't find any cause. Took a chance and drove it to work this morning, and the noise didnt start until I was 3 minutes from work. Coming home this afternoon it didnt start until I turned on the air conditioner, but changing the air con mode seemed to stop it.
It seems to be a very intermittent problem but its taking any enjoyment out of driving the car. I cant make out for sure where the noise is coming from.
Has anyone experienced this before, or have any ideas on how to fix it?
Cheers,
Liam
Sounds like a vacume hose off under the dash or a hole in one
Its difficult to pinpoint what the problem might be...but here are a few suggestions.
Either your serpentine belt is slipping which could mean you need a new belt, your tensioner is not applying enough tension on your belt, or one or more of your pulleys in your engine is indicating that its time to replace them.
Another is get your coil packs and ignition modules checked. Also check your spark plugs and leads.
Has the battery indicator lamp come on during your drive? Have your alternator checke. It could be the regulator is out.
Let us know how you go.
The spark plugs were changed last week - the car has only done 80000kms and the plugs got done as part of the 80k service.
There hasnt been any warning lights on the dash at all, and they all seem to work normally when the ignition is switched to on.
Edit: Just had a play with it in the driveway - the sound seems to be related to the air conditioner or fan system. I'm able to make the sound start by setting the mode to head and feet, and stop the sound by cycling off this mode. When the car made the noise this morning though, I hadnt touched the fan or air con at all. Very strange, does this help narrow it down?
