As the title quotes.
Recently I have been offered a lowering job done for free by cutting the springs down by 1-2 coils.
I know this isnt safe and/or roadworthy but would it be worth doing?
The car is a VT V6 with standard springs/suspension, standard bumpers/sideskirts.
Has anyone done this before? If so what difference did you notice in handling?
Worse handling? better handling? Tire wear?
and how low did you go?
its a commodore, just do it.
Do a search. Bad idea and is illegal. Your insurance company will have something to say about it too.

Any idea on what price range a wreckers would be looking at for a set of springs of an ss maybe?
their is nothing wrong with cutting springs provided u no what u r doing ,well yes it might no be illegal, but an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel will cut them like cheese, the problem is when u cut to much of them and every time u jack the car up they fall out of place,so u have to know what u r doing, they handle better than standed they dont break ,their just shorter of cause real lowered springs r the way to go because they can tell u how much they will lower your car ,where as cutting is somtimes a bit at a time ,2 coils will drop a commodore 50 mill or 2 and a half inches easily,i have driven cars 4 30 years will cut springs with not one problem,if a spring is a different size from top to bottom u need an oxy but if u dont know what u r doing don't start, and rember it is illegal
If you cut your springs don't bother paying your insurance because it will be void. Seriously springs are $130 a pair these days and if you shop around or get second hand ones it will cost you even less. Why risk it to save a couple of hundred bucks? Also you can't cut the rear springs on a VT as the coil tapers inwards on the top and bottom of the spring.

exactly right![]()
wouldnt do it, stupid idea.
last week i pulled into a servo and there was a bloke there asking if he could borrow my jack, wheel brace etc.
asked what happened "my cut spring popped out and cut a hole in my tyre".
think about what would happen going 100 on the freeway?
wow lumina I never looked at it that way.
Thanks for the advice guys. I think Ill stay safe and purchase some proper springs.
I have a 1yo daughter and its not worth risking her life to save a few bob
Put it this way. Lets say you cut two coils off a spring. There's two less coils taking the weight of each corner. The stress placed on the remaining coils is increased and there is a greater chance of something bad happening when you don't want it too. Things are made illegal for a reason.
Car theives should be treated just like horse theives and cattle rustlers in the days of the wild west... Hang them!
Don't be stupid. Power isn't measured by the size of your tacho
smart move
Now im not trying to priomaote cut springs as i re4ally am against it but when ime dad was ringing around for springs for my vs they're was a spring place he rang and the dude said to just cut them as when he worked for the spring company in Melbourne that used to send them to cars over seas and Australia they wanted lower springs so they just cut liek 2 coils off and sent them away.....when i was told this i was like WTF......jesus christ
all in all dont do it keep safe...fair enough heaps of people have done it with no problems but if and when it happens i hope you don't kill or hurt other people or you own child/children.
Cutting springs go down like a Muslim in a pork shop during Ramadan.
Cutting springs would make the car bottom out something shocking.

lol yes, cut springs do fall out :S kinda scary when it happens.
It is safer to buy a proper set. Or you may be able to get them heated and compressed.
I wasn't going to bother posting on another "how good are cut springs?" thread, but my post count just went up one.
Oh, spring cutters are retards, too.
I can't see the point in cutting springs, for the money you might save, you're modifying your suspension in a way it wasn't intended to be modified, therefore making your car dangerous and unroadworthy, not to mention that if you stack it, the insurance company will laugh at you. Save up, spend the extra, and get it done properly, suspension is one part of your car that you DON'T want to be cheap with.

Pfft, just take them all the way out and ride around on bump stops. No fear of a spring coming out then.
And if you find your car is too high...just cut the bump stops in half![]()
