can you just jack the car up from the diff, to take the shocks/springs out ?

no, you can't jack it from the diff because then the springs and shocks are still compressed and rather hard to remove.

you can jack it up from the sides, so the shocks are fully extended, and the springs are less compressed.

Its IRS, nothing like live axle the diff always stays in the same place.

In regards to the thread starter, Yes you can jack it up from the diff, but i would advise putting it on stands while you're working underneath it.

    Cheers.

Some of the suspension places i have seen do rear springs, Just jack the bum up on the hoist like normal, And pull the springs out by hand..

If you don't have a hoist

Both rear wheels have to be off the ground and the hand brake has to be off. Undo the shocks first then the springs will come out.

Yes, you can jack it up by the diff.

I just did mine a few weeks ago using a jack. I found I could get the old rear springs out with a jimmy bar, but I had to actually undo and drop the rear drive shafts from the wheel end to get the new ones in properly as the control arms wouldn't lower enough (the drive shafts hit on the sway bar) . The front were very very easy, as the springs and struts are a single unit that can be removed by undoing a few bolts. I used axle stands for the front and to be honest, the hardest bit I found was getting the brake rotors off as they were stuck. All up it took a day to do as I had not done it before and that time included constructing and putting in a new set of struts, springs, bearings, bushes, link pins, castor tensioners, strut brace, calipers, pads and rotors and rear springs, shocks and brakes. It was fun as now I know how to do it, I'll never have to pay anybody to do it in the future.

You don't need to remove the brake rotors. Undo the top nut, undo the two bolts holding the strut to the stub axle, undo the stabilizer bar link pins.
