Hi guys,
My Vt is currently sitting on 17" rims. im thinking of upgrading, possibly to a 19, but i happen to see some awesome 20's..
So question is are they too big for the car? will they Greatly affect preformance?
And i can bet that legally there is an issue but thats not my case.
Anyone got 20's on a VT?
Ta
if the car came standard with 15" then the highest you can go is 17" legally
20" are at risk of having the car defected
19" you can still get defected for but their not as obvious
its always 2" from standard is the maximum
you also start running into problems with 20"
fitment, camber, suspension ect...
by law you can go as big as you want, its the width that becomes a proplem. you can only go an inch and a half wider than standard, so if your vt had 15 by 7 alloys as standard you can go to 8.5 inches wide and so on. 20 inch wheels look great but practically not real good for everyday driving because you have to be so careful about every pot hole and bump. Plus the ass end of commodores scrub out the inside of the rear tyres pretty bad and 20's are pretty expensive and i dont see anyone get more than 15 -20 thousand KM out of them. Another drama is you can only get a 225/30r20 size tyre on the front anything wider usually scrapes and that size tyre doesnt have the correct size load rating for a commodore and cops are onto this and can defect you.
The thing is 20's look great and its your money so its your decision. Plus if you get defected all you do is put stocky's back on to get it passed again.
no you cant big as you want, the rolling diameter of the new rim + tyre can not exceed bigger than +25mm from memory

I think 20's can look ok. Unless you have coilovers then you have to use 225 rubber and it looks crap! Tyres are skinnier than the wheels!
Victorian cops are arseholes when it comes to canaries.
They WILL defect you if too big.
In QLD we never had the worry about wheel size except for a roady but down here I personally wouldnt risk it.
I'd play it safe and go 19" or atleast keep a set of stockies incase it happens.
Also in Victoria it IS 2 inches. NOT the diameter!
NO its not. Look up the law mate, ring VicRoads. Just because a mate said so does not make it true. It is 15mm within original overall rolling diameter. Rim size does not matter.
I have posted the direct law like 150 times on this website. Do a search or find it on the Vic Roads Website... It is VSI 8: Guide to Modifications for Motor Vehicles section 8 'Wheels and Tyres'. VSI 8 is here, just go to section 8: http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...340/0/VSI8.pdf
19 inch and 20 inch tyres are about the same price. but as i said before a 20 inch tyre usually doesnt have the correct load rating for a commy, ive been pulled up by nsw coppers and they dont say **** about my 20's, even though i have like 275 tyres on the rear. just depends on how bad the coppers are in your area
It is correct that its 15mm overall diameter, I proved this to a cop as he had defected me twice before for "wheels too big" when they werent, I got the info from vicroads and kept it in the car, they were legal, he even got out a tape measure...
turn around and defected me for an after market steering wheel and the exhaust sticking out too far though (dont think he as happy LOL)
Next thing is to make sure the tyres are the correct load rating! I have just bought 20's and have found only 1 tyre that meets the load rating requirements in the size I wanted and that wont foul on struts etc.
Can be done, but watch a lot of the packages sold as they come with incorrect load rated tyres.
Nankang NS2 in 245/30/20 is 95 load rated.
20's are awsome is you like that sort of thing, i havnt haad any trouble with the cops, i got pulled over the other day and they said nothing, i forgot to mention i hate the 20's thats are all rim like this

i like my ones![]()

WRONG. In vic you can go any diameter wheel. BUT you are limited to the overall diameter/circumference of rim+tyre combination to within 15mm diameter (i think) bigger or smaller. So if you put a huge rim on, you need a very small profile tyre so that the overall circumference is about the same. You are also limited by wheel width... you can only go 1" wider than the widest wheel that was release with you model car... refer to tyre placard on your car for this.

Agreed
275's on the rears with 20s? u got a pic of those id like 2 see them on? and r they on ur VR?
Just make sure u dont go the cheap way out yes they mayb expensive but if u can afford a set of 20's u should b able 2 spend up properly on a decent set of 20 tyres and not just the 1st cheap set u see that has the right load rating. Otherwise if u cant afford it go down 2 18s.
