hey there i recently bought an electric antenna for my VT executive as my old standard antenna snapped off and picked this electric antenna up cheap. i was wondering how you go about hooking this electric antenna in place of the standard one? if anyone knows that would be great
my ex flatmate had a vs 'ss' ute which came with a non-auto aerial. he got the panel beaters to install an auto aerial when they did some body work. also maybe try yellowpages & see if there are any auto electricians near you who would be able to fit it for you. if you want to fit it yourself tho unfortunately i have no idea. hopefully this helps in a little way
I upgraded my stock antenna to electric a few months ago, pretty straight forward to change over. Cost about $80-$100 for holden part. Couldn't be bothered buying cheap brand for $20 as I was hoping I could connect it straight to the loom. My mistake, stupid EXEC wiring looms. Now being an EXEC same as mine you will have to cut the loom supplied by holden on the antenna and give the antenna an input to go up/down when the car goes on/off.
From memory there are 3 wires, Ground, (to ground) White to constant power, and red to radio antenna output or ACC+ depending on your radio. I would play with the antenna when you get it make sure the braided cable is ground and the other 2 you can play with a 12V source to see how it goes up/down. (* I take no responsibility disclaimer here*) Depending how far you want to go you can also put in a switch to make it go only half way up/down. But this is maybe over kill (I only wanted to stop the drunken louts snapping my antenna, so up when the stereo was on was fine for me.) Havn't had anywhere that i have had to have the antenna go down yet.
You will have to remove the left hand front wheel, have the car on a jack, and remove or should I say try to move the plastic mud guard covers and install the antenna from the outside of the car. Its a bit tricky and a few dropped swear words but you should get this done in about an hour.
Now that said I kinda wondered about putting a VY antenna on the rear purely because of the wind friction caused on the antenna on speeds over 120... a kinda ssssshhhhhhh sound... And at higher velocity there is a fair amount of air pressure on the antenna maybe a 5degree bend at the top, I guess your antenna will be the least of your worries at these speeds anyway
Let us know how you go or if you need anymore info/wiring etc.
