    Default Audio Speaker Confusion

    Hi All,

I just installed a Kenwood headunit, leaving the front speakers standard, killing the rear door speakers and installing a 6 x 9 instead at the parcel shelf. I think I made a mistake by installing a 6 x 9 instead of a subwoofer.

I initially convinced myself that I don't need a subwoofer because I listen to music pretty normal not loud. I am happy with it but not fully satisfied because at low levels I don't hear a bass or a thump.

NOW.....I want to change the front to decent splits, change the rear door speakers to decent ones and add a subwoofer plus necessary amps. I want to use the 6 x 9 still with the subwoofer because it's a waste to kill them.

Is it okay to run all (front, rear door, 6 x 9, plus a subwoofer).

Also is it possible to mount the subwoofer in the middle parcel shelf in between the 6 x 9? WOuld cutting the middle part weaken the structure? I was thinking 1 x 8 inch or ten inch (if it fits) for the little extra thump.

Please advice because I am getting confused....thanks.

shouldnt this be in the car audio section :S

Anyway... Running 6x9s is kinda pointless when having a sub as well. 6x9s are meant to be a sub replacement, it would be better if you had:

High quality 6" splits in the front
    6" in the rear doors
    then get a 8" or 10" sub
    and a 5 channel amp

And about putting a sub in the back shelf, it is illegal to cut any holes in the back shelf, and yes it would weaken it, id suggest if you want to save space, mount the amp between the speaker holes on the back shelf and get a 10" sub in a box and sit it at the back of the boot. Thats IMO anyway.

Cutting the metal is illegal yes and not something you want to be picked up on in an RWC as its pretty hard to undo.

they are there already there are just 3 small spot welds holding the plate in. just a small tap and the plate will drop out and just slide the speaker in. i installed some on a series 1 vt executive, so if the base model has it all the rest of the vt range should have it

yeah on the rear shelf there are already 6x9 holes, you just have to knock out tthe spot welds, i used a hammer and nail punch. You might have to drill holes for the bolts that hold the speaker down tho...

Some models, like Statesman etc, come already fitted with 6x9's in the parcel shelf, so I don't see any problems with it being legal.

Some cars don't come with airbags, but it's illegal to remove them from ones that do

If the plates are tack welded in you should be fine to remove them, but if you have to physically cut holes then it is modifying the structure of the car.
